Week 21: Monday, January 29th – Friday, February 2nd

Advisory

This week, we explored our ability to focus on the opportunities in life rather than on the challenges. We discussed how even challenges can be used in our quest to improve ourselves.

Judaic Studies

Inspired by a student, we tried something new this week — exploring what Judaism has to say about an issue important to middle schoolers. We began by looking at several texts about depression and anxiety, and used them as jumping off points to reflect on our own experiences. We also thought about what it means to be a good friend to someone who is struggling. There was deep listening and thinking, and it was an honor to be in the room.

Hebrew

This week in Hebrew, HaKbatza Aleph has been discussing people who had a dream and made it come true. We also started reviewing the past tense.

HaKbatza Bet has been studying texts that describe what it means to be Israeli. we also learned three prepositions: LACHENthereforere), KDEY (in order to) and BIGLAL (because of).

I wish everyone a good weekend,

Andreea

Humanities

Reading and Writing: This week, we continued our work on Othello by completing Act III and starting our work on Act IV.  Students took on the roles of actors, directors and dramaturges by rehearsing and performing brief scenes for their classmates.  Is Othello a tragic hero whose flaws show his basic humanity or is he colonialist caricature meant to represent Moors as weak-minded and brutish?  As we continue to analyze the play, students will try to determine the answer to this question for themselves.

History: After a long hiatus, we are back to having history class (yay!).  We started our work on the war of independence by playing Capture the Flag.  Each new round of the game came with rules that were analogous to the changing conditions that allowed the Continential Army to defeat the British.  We will now read more about the battles, personalities and strategic decisions that proved decisive in the Patriots’ victory and Redcoats’ defeat.

Hope you enjoy the weekend,

Michael

Math

This week in math the students finished chapter six and created a wonderful project with what they learned about transformations on a graph. They are now moving on to chapter 7 about angles. They will continue with chapter 7 next week.

Hope everyone has a good weekend,

Craig

Science

Students in science continued with their cooking chemistry unit. Over the weeks groups have built strong collaborative group relationships. This has allowed them to explore the required techniques and skills required within the culinary sciences. When mistakes accorded during the activity, thoughtful suggestions were made in a calm respectful manner in order to correct problems. This week students worked with a single egg in order to convert the raw item into a custom breakfast dish. The excitement for this unit has allowed everyone to enjoy learning the science behind cooking.
