Purim Week

Hello Fourth Grade Families!
We had a wonderful time celebrating Purim with our students and parent guests yesterday! Thank you to everyone who could attend. It’s hard to believe (especially since we only just got back from February break), but Pesach is only four weeks away! We are very busy learning and preparing for Pesach, while also enjoying some upcoming events, including our Field Trip to Plymouth Church on Tuesday, March 13.
A reminder to parents to sign up for Parent Teacher Conferences, which take place on March 15 (and in the evening of March 19). Thank you!
Shabbat Shalom! -The Fourth Grade Team
PEEK AT NEXT WEEK:
  • Tuesday, March 6 – Yom Shuk in Hebrew Class
  • Tuesday, March 13 – Field Trip to Plymouth Church
  • Thursday, March 15 – Parent Teacher Conferences, No Classes

HEBREW with Ilana:

On Tuesday, March 6th, we are planing to do Yom Shuk (Market Day) in Hebrew class. The students worked before the break and this week on their written projects and they are looking forward for that day. They chose what to present and for Tuesday they will need to bring the food that they chose. Kindly make sure that they will bring all the items needed for that day.

Shabbat Shalom

JUDAIC STUDIES with Aliza:
All of this week, the fourth grade has been intensely learning the text of Megillat Esther for Purim. We learned the historical background/context, Jewish significance, and hidden layers of the story, and read through all ten chapters in English. We are excited to do the same with the Pesach Haggadah starting next week. Our Jewish Hero of the Week is Stan Lee, the co-creator of Marvel Comics and characters such as Spider-man, Iron Man, The Fantastic Four, and the X-Men. Shabbat Shalom!

GENERAL STUDIES with Miriam:
This has been such a festive week! We have had birthdays, Purim and even a visit from our former classmate, Jojo! In math, we have finished our decimals unit and are just starting angles. In social studies, we are continuing our study of the Civil War and slavery. We are also reading books about this topic in our groups. Our newest writing project is an opinion writing piece on which Jane Addams nominee we think should win the award.
SCIENCE with Sammi:
The last month in fourth grade science has been devoted to proteins. Your scientist learned that amino acids are the “building blocks” of proteins and help us strengthen our muscles. They learned how to test for protein with coomassie blue strips and tested all their liquids for proteins. The only liquid that showed a positive result was milk. Before break we broke the milk down into it’s two parts, curds and whey, so we could see where the protein in milk is coming from. Students learned that there are two proteins in milk- whey protein (in the whey) and casein protein (in the curd). Together these two proteins make milk a protein packed, healthy drink! The students asked me to post the instructions for separating milk into curds and whey so you can find those below. If you’re home this weekend give it a try!
1) Pour two cups of milk into a pot.
2) Turn the stove to a medium-low heat and stir constantly until the milk simmers.
3) Turn the heat off and continue stirring as you add in 1 tablespoon of white vinegar.
4) As you continue to stir the curds and whey will separate
5) Put a coffee filer on top of a mug (use a rubber band to hold it in place) and slowly pour in the curds and whey mixture (the whey will go through the filter to separate from the whey)
6) Repeat the step again to help continue the separation.
7) Add two pinches of salt (or other seasoning) to the curd and enjoy!

This week the students continued their study of proteins and tested their foods. We will analyze the results next week and then wrap up our unit by putting all their knowledge together in one final lab test.
