Humanities

In Social Studies, students are finishing our unit on Indigenous perspective of European colonization of America. Students have read primary and secondary sources on the topic and written thoughtful responses about the effects of colonization on Native North America. Additionally, we wrapped up our election unit as students analyzed the election results.

In ELA, we have just begun our unit on The Crucible. Students are looking forward to planning the showcase for parents in December!

Science

Science last month had started its exploration of molecules, chemical bonds, and chemical reactions. They used interactive software to understand the differences of covalent and ionic bonding. This focused their understanding into the concepts of how electrons interact with other atoms in order to create stable bonds of molecules. We conducted a few experiments in the science lab including using a chemical relation to create chalk and using energy to break down water into hydrogen and oxygen gases. We will continue with our experiments in the coming weeks to further explore physical and chemical changes and the effect of temperature on molecules and reactions. We cannot wait to continue our hands on activities and experiments in order to master these science concepts, even while keeping individually safe during these covid times.

Dear parents,
For the last few weeks, students in the accelerated track have been learning how to describe the future, the present and the past. In addition the students practiced writing a paragraph about how their expectations for 8th grade.
The Regular Track continued to practice describing fashion and their choices in clothes.
The independent track students have finished the first four units in their program and are moving on to more complex conversations. Students in this track need to learn a unit per week and will take a weekly quiz at the end of the week.
I wish everyone lots of health,
Andreea

Math

The 8th grade has been hard at work expanding their knowledge of linear equations and inequalities. In the coming weeks, they will be focusing on different types of functions and their graphs.

This is also the final week of their participation in Khan Academy LearnStorm; they have already met all of their level goals! Great job, 8th grade!

Judaic Studies
The 8th graders have finished our unit on obligations between parents and children through Torah and Rabbinic sources. We thought about what values were communicated by the Torah and Rabbinic laws we looked at, and then wrote about our own values and rules for our future children that would pass our values on. We are now preparing to study the final book of the Torah, Deuteronomy, and to think about the question of legacy, and passing on values, from the perspective of Moshe saying goodbye to the Israelites. Students will connect this to their own experience, preparing to leave Hannah Senesh and go on to high school.
Shabbat shalom!
