Calling Brooklyn Families! Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a hands-on morning of community service designed especially for young children and their grownups. Families will take part in creative, age-appropriate activities that directly support local organizations and community needs—including a special adaptive-equipment mini-build designed to help young children with mobility challenges, alongside food, book, and care-package projects. Join us for a meaningful morning as we turn Dr. King’s values into action together.
What to Expect
Children and adults will divide into small groups and rotate through a series of engaging service stations, each offering a unique way to contribute:
- Brighten Someone’s Day Create artwork and write cards to uplift seniors and families experiencing hardship.
- Support Neighbors Experiencing Food Insecurity Help assemble dried food kits and take part in a kid-friendly cooking activity that supports local meal-distribution efforts.
- Spread the Joy of Reading Sort and bundle children’s books to help increase access to literacy-rich homes across New York City.
- Build Something That Helps Others Take part in a simple, hands-on building activity where families help assemble pieces of a Toddler Mobility Trainer (TMT), a supportive device that helps young children with mobility needs.
- Hands-On Justice Learning Participate in simple, meaningful learning moments that help kids connect with Dr. King’s vision of fairness, courage, and compassion.
- Special Program for Littles (great for kids under 5) Delight in music, sensory play, and a cozy storytime designed just for our youngest helpers with Tkiya Music (https://www.tkiya.org/) and PJ Library (https://newyork.pjlibrary.org/).
Join us to honor Dr. King's legacy through community, creativity, and collective action. Let's make a difference, together!
