Welcome to 8th Grade!

Dear 8th Grade Parents,

We can’t wait for Tuesday! We are super excited to think, discuss, support, and challenge your 8th graders this year. Please remind your 8th grader to bring a water bottle and a layer (sometimes the air conditioning makes it pretty cold!). Below are brief notes from the members of the 8th grade team — please feel free to reach out to us directly if you have questions or concerns or good news to share!

Warmly,

The 8th Grade Team

Joseph Hayden, 8th Grade Advisor and Humanities

I am so very excited to begin my first year at Hannah Senesh (and my 6th year in education) with this group of 8th graders! I have heard only good things about the class, and look forward to engaging students in new and challenging content that will solidify the work they’ve already been doing in previous years. As students read books from contemporary and historic American authors in their ELA course, they will also learn about the rich American legacy in their Social Studies course. I look forward to all the curiosity the students bring!

Andreea Adereth, 8th Grade Advisor and Hebrew

Bruchim HaBaym Le Ivrit- Welcome to a year of Hebrew!

>My name is Andreea Adereth and this is my 11th year teaching Hebrew in the Middle School at Hannah Senesh. Teaching Hebrew as a Second Language is my passion! I look forward to guiding the children on an exciting journey in which they will discover the beauty of speaking a second language and will be able to communicate with Israelis and with Hebrew speakers from the entire world. In addition to teaching Hebrew, I strive to instill in my students a lifelong love for learning and a real connection to Israel, to its people, language, and culture. 8th Grade is an especially meaningful year since the students will be able to use all that they have learned over the years on their trip to Israel.

I can always be reached at aadereth@hannahsenesh.org and I cannot wait to meet everyone soon!

Shana Orlando, 8th Grade Advisor and Math

Hi everyone! My name is Shana Orlando and I’m excited to be returning for my second year as the 7th and 8th grade math teacher at Hannah Senesh. I had a wonderful time getting to know the 7th graders last year and I look forward to teaching and advising them this year! Please feel free to contact me at sorlando@hannahsenesh.org. Go Class of 2020!!

Phyllis Sussman, Israel

We are looking forward to exploring Israel today in new and engaging ways.  From current events, with a specific focus on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, to preparation for the Israel trip, our class will prioritize building and practicing the skills of respectful and objective dialogue. A highlight of our year will be kicking off our Israel trip by participating in the new and innovative IAC Eitanim project – https://www.israeliamerican.org/eitanim. We can’t wait to get started!

Jessica Lissy Trey, Judaic Studies

!ברוכים הבאים / Welcome back! I can’t wait for another year of learning with the 8th grade. This year we will be finishing the Torah and looking at selections from Nevi’im/Prophets, as well as exploring both legal and narrative texts from the Talmud. An overarching theme of the year will be Legacy: what has been passed on to you? What will you pass on to others? What will you do with the gifts you have been given? Through the story of Moshe’s farewell to Bnai Yisrael, rabbinic texts about the relationship between parents and children, and preparing to leave Hannah Senesh, 8th graders will take a deep dive into what it means to be the inheritors of our tradition.

I look forward to a year of deep spiritual and intellectual learning, to celebrating your children as they grow, and to getting ready for the 8th grade Israel trip!

Please be in touch with questions, concerns, and ideas at jlissy@hannahsenesh.org
