Math

Hello parents! My name is Katie and I am so excited to be returning to Senesh to teach 5th grade math. This year you can expect your children to come home excited about what they have learned. We will be learning through real life situations, projects, puzzles, and using our creativity on a daily basis. Along with math concepts and skills, we will also be focusing on confidence in the classroom, respect for one another, organization, and putting in our best effort in everything we do.  What a wonderful week! There were nerves and excitement as your children embraced their second year of middle school! This week in math, we got to know each other and the students started their first project. The students learned about different number systems around the world, and then created and analyzed their very own number system! In the next few weeks we will be learning about multiples and factors and reviewing operations with decimals.

Welcome to 6th Grade! 9/17/21

Humanities
Hi! I’m Naomi, and this is my 6th year as a 6th grade humanities teacher and advisor at Hannah Senesh. It’s so exciting to start off this year back in the building each day! I’ve had a great time beginning to get to know the students this week, and I’m looking forward to a year filled with academic growth and joyful learning in our friendly and colorful classrooms.
In Social Studies and English Language Arts, students can expect to engage deeply with texts: we’ll read critically for deeper meaning and draw connections to our own lives and the world at large. As we learn about ancient cultures in places like Greece and Rome, we’ll examine how history continues to impact our lives today. We will also focus on an overarching 6th grade humanities theme: “Finding a Voice.” This theme will guide our learning as we hone our reading, writing, and speaking skills, and as we listen and learn from diverse perspectives. To this end, we’ll continuously come back to our essential questions for the year:
  1. How can reading, listening, and building relationships with others help me develop a more confident and informed voice?
  2. How can I use my voice to create positive change in the world and in my community?
Outside of work, I love reading, going to the beach, playing board games, biking, hiking, and generally staying active. I was lucky enough to travel to South Africa and Zimbabwe this summer, and I can’t wait to share some photos from my safari with the kids! I’m looking forward to learning about all of the 6th graders’ hobbies, interests, and summer experiences too.

The best way to contact me is through e-mail at NForman@hannahsenesh.org. Have a wonderful weekend and shana tova.

Best,

Naomi

JUDAICS
My name is Laura, I am the 5th and 6th grade Judaics and Tefillah teacher. I have been here for 8 wonderful years. I am currently in Rabbinical school with the Aleph ordination program (Renewal Judaism) and I am the Spiritual Leader of Beloved Brooklyn. I am so happy to have a second year with these students and to get to know the new students!
What an amazing start to the year! We have jumped right into our learning in Judaics thinking about how rituals help us get to the goals of the holidays. We explored the idea of Teshuva (returning to our best self) and how the ritual tashlich can help us learn from our past experiences and move forward without feeling weighed down. We then listened to the different sounds of the shofar and learned how each sound has a special job to wake us up to different beneficial thoughts for the new year. Students are now continuing with a text from the Mishnah (Oral Torah) about how hearing the sound of the shofar only “counts” if you direct your heart to it. We will continue diving into this idea of intention and being mindful about what we are doing in order to get the greatest benefit from it and live our best lives.
Shabbat Shalom,
Laura

SCIENCE

Hello, I am Mike Noll, an excited fifth year school teacher here at Hannah Senesh. I hope to continue contributing to the community as your Middle School science teacher. I have been involved with Middle School science for over a decade. I cannot wait to continue to demonstrate my passion for science with your child as we explore the subject through creative hands-on projects and activities. I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer. I am looking forward, with great anticipation, to a fabulous year of science learning. Throughout the year, if you have any questions concerning our class or your child, please do not hesitate to contact me at mnoll@hannahsenesh.org.

Sincerely,

Hebrew:

Welcome to the Hebrew class! My name is Yuliya and this year is my third year in Hannah Senesh. We started this year by introducing each other in Hebrew and talking about how the summer was. I was very excited to meet my old and new students and get to know them better during this year. We repeated the rules for verbs in the past tense and prepositions in Hebrew. In addition, we discussed Jewish tradition tashlich after doing it one morning during advisory class. We continue to learn Hebrew language connecting to Jewish tradition and culture.

If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me at yshifrin@hannahsenesh.org

Chag Sukkot Sameah!
