Welcome to 6th Grade! 9/11/20

Humanities:
My name is Naomi Forman, and I’m looking forward to another year as a 6th grade humanities teacher and advisor. While this year may feel different and strange at first, I’m confident that together we’ll learn joyfully, challenge ourselves academically, and grow even stronger as a community. I can’t wait to continue to see many 6th grade faces (though mask-covered!) back in our friendly and colorful classrooms, and I’m also excited to try out innovative digital platforms during our remote classes online.
In Social Studies and English Language Arts, students can expect to engage deeply with texts: they’ll read critically for deeper meaning and draw connections to their own lives and the world around them. As we learn about ancient cultures in places like Greece and Rome, we’ll examine how history continues to impact our lives today. In particular, as the 2020 presidential election nears, we’ll pay close attention to the democratic systems and philosophies developed all the way back in ancient times, and we’ll compare and contrast them to the democratic processes in the U.S. today.
Outside of work, I love reading, playing board games, biking, hiking, and generally staying active. I’m looking forward to learning about all of the 6th graders’ hobbies and interests, too!

The best way to contact me is through e-mail at NForman@hannahsenesh.org. Have a wonderful weekend!

Best,

Naomi

Judaics:

I am so happy to have a second year teaching your children and to meet all of the wonderful new additions to our class.  I look forward to being able to pick up where we left off last year and continue to grow text skills, understanding and personal connection to our Jewish text, history and traditions. This year we will be diving into the book of Exodus/ Shemot as well as Rabbinic text surrounding the holidays. We will be beginning the year using our learning about the High Holidays to talk about acting with intention and thinking about what kind of community we want to create in 6th grade. Our learning this year will help us process and reflect on the state of the world and our experiences during this very different time.

I have had the privilege to work at Senesh for 7 years.  Outside of Senesh I am beginning my Rabbinic Ordination with Aleph, a Renewal ordination program. I am also the intern Rabbi with Beloved Brooklyn where I lead a weekly Jewish Meditation group. I am excited to bring my learning into the classroom. I especially hope that the mindfulness techniques I bring to the students this year can help with these trying times.

Wishing you all a Shana Tova (Good New Year). May the renewal of our calendar bring a sense of renewal to each of us as we move forward and navigate the year.

Hebrew :

I am very excited to continue teaching my students from last year and to greet my new students in class. I am also glad to be an advisor of 6B pod this year. I am looking forward to starting the new academic year with new Hebrew texts, terms, movies and to learn interesting things. This year we will focus on learning Hebrew through Israeli traditions and culture. We will begin with getting more familiar with Israel and learn in detail about different places in Israel, Israeli food and music. Hopefully, that will add a little bit of color to our lessons during this very different time.

This is my second year in Hannah Senesh Community Day School as a Hebrew teacher and an advisor. I have 25 years of experience in the education system and I am very happy to use and bring this experience in my teaching in Hannah Senesh.

I wish us all a great and successful year full of learning new things!

Please feel free to contact me, preferably through email: yshifrin@hannahsenesh.org.

Sincerely,

Yuliya Shifrin Izraev

Science:

Hello, I am Mike Noll, an excited fourth year school teacher here at Hannah Senesh. I hope to continue contributing to the community as your Middle School science and advisory teacher. I have been involved with Middle School science for over a decade. I cannot wait to continue to demonstrate my passion for science with your child as we explore the subject through creative projects and activities. I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer. I am looking forward, with great anticipation, to a fabulous year of science learning. Throughout the year, if you have any questions concerning our class or your child, please do not hesitate to contact me at mnoll@hannahsenesh.org.

Sincerely,

Mike Noll

Mathematics:

Shana tova! I’m Geneva Reventlow and I’m excited to teach sixth grade math this semester as Katie’s maternity leave substitute. I worked at Senesh for eighteen years before moving to Austin, Texas to be closer to my parents and sisters. Since I will be teaching remotely, Seth Montag will also be in the classroom on in-person days. Seth is the brother-in-law of Sarah Kay and has worked as a sub at Senesh in the past.

This semester, I hope to teach sixth graders to approach new and challenging problems with confidence and curiosity and to embrace mistakes as part of the learning process. .When possible, please encourage students to reach out to me to communicate their needs and questions; I believe that it is important for students to know how and when to communicate with teachers and middle school is a great time to start learning this skill. My email address is greventlow@hannahsenesh.org

Sincerely,

Geneva Reventlow
