Welcome to 6th Grade! 8/29/19

6TH GRADE TEAM:
Dear 6th grade parents,
We are Mike Noll and Naomi Forman, and beyond teaching science and humanities classes, we’re excited to be on the 6th grade team this year. As the 6th grade advisors, we will be looking out for your child’s general social/emotional and academic wellbeing at Hannah Senesh. We’ll also be leading the students in community service and social justice initiatives, planning various field trips, and facilitating team-building activities and ice-breakers during advisory classes twice a week. You can expect an e-mail from one of us soon with more details. We can’t wait to better get to know the 6th graders, and we’re particularly excited about welcoming several new students to Hannah Senesh!
Have a great weekend and we’ll see you when school begins! For now, if you have questions, you may reach us at NForman@Hannahsenesh.org or MNoll@hannahsenesh.org

HUMANITIES:
My name is Naomi Forman, and I’m looking forward to my fourth year teaching 6th grade humanities at Senesh. In Social Studies and English Language Arts, students will learn to engage with texts in new ways. They’ll track themes and literary devices, read critically for deeper meaning, and draw connections to their own lives and the world around them. Students will also examine how history impacts us today as we learn about ancient cultures in places like Greece and Rome. And of course, students will continue to hone their writing skills as they produce narrative, informational, and persuasive writing pieces. I’m confident that the year will be both engaging and rigorous, and I’m looking forward to learning and teaching alongside the students.
Outside of work, I love reading, playing board games, and staying active. This summer, I visited Seattle, Vancouver, and L.A. for the first time; the west coast was refreshing and beautiful!
Please remind your child to be prepared with the summer reading homework worksheet, and to review the summer reading book– Gilgamesh the Hero — before coming to school. You can find the worksheet and more details here: https://www.hannahsenesh.org/parents-2/summer-reading/

The best way to contact me is through e-mail, at NForman@hannahsenesh.org. Have a wonderful weekend, and I can’t wait to see the new sixth graders next week.

Best,

Naomi

MATH:

Hello parents! My name is Katie and I am so excited to be returning to Senesh to teach 6th grade math. This year you can expect your children to come home excited about what they have learned. We will be learning through real life situations, projects, puzzles, and using our creativity on a daily basis. Things we will work along side of the math concepts are confidence in the classroom, respect for one another, organization, and putting in our best effort in everything we do. We will start out the year learning about the wonderful world of Whole Numbers (expressions and equations, exponents, order of operations, factors and multiples, etc). I am looking forward to a great year! – Katie

JUDAICS:

I am so happy to have a second year teaching your children and to meet all of the wonderful new additions to our class.  I look forward to being able to pick up where we left off last year and continue to grow text skills, understanding and personal connection to our Jewish text, history and traditions. This year we will be diving into the book of Exodus/ Shemot as well as Rabbinic text surrounding the holidays. We will be beginning the year using our learning about the High Holidays to talk about acting with intention and thinking about what kind of community we want to create in 6th grade. Our Holiday units this year have a special focus on diversity which you will see in their “Ashamnu Zine making workshop” that will help kick off a conversation about collective responsibility.  This summer I was lucky enough to be a part of the very first Romemu Yeshiva where I spent six intensive weeks in contemplative text study classes and Jewish meditation. I am looking forward to bringing some of the gems I learned into this class, especially during our tefillah time.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns,  Lmarder@hannahsenesh.org

SCIENCE:

Hello, I am Mike Noll an excited third year school teacher here at Hannah Senesh. I hope to continue contributing to the community as your Middle School science teacher. I have been involved with Middle School science for over a decade. I cannot wait to continue to demonstrate my passion for science with your child as we explore the subject through hands on projects and activities. I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer. I am looking forward, with great anticipation, to a fabulous year of science learning. Throughout the year, if you have any questions concerning our class or your child, please do not hesitate to contact me at mnoll@hannahsenesh.org.

BAR/BAT MITZVAH CLASS:

I am excited to get to know all of the sixth graders and their families this year as we begin the exploration of becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, or becoming a Jewish adult.  During our once a week bar/bat mitzvah class, students will delve deep into our school values as they consider what it means to become a responsible, adult member of the Jewish community.  Through hands-on, project-based learning, students will Hitmid (persevere) through Rabbinic and historic texts about what it has meant traditionally to become a bar/bat mitzvah, practice Elu V’Elu (openness) by gaining an appreciation for the diverse array of bar/bat mitzvah traditions in contemporary Jewish communities, and build opportunities to take Areivut (responsibility) for the greater community.  Starting in January each of you will be invited to attend your child’s mini-Bar/Bat Mitzvah where your child will deliver a dvar Torah and read Torah for our middle school tefila (prayer) community!  Additionally, feel free to reach out to me with questions about planning for this important milestone in your child and family’s Jewish journey.

ברוכים הבאים לעברית- Welcome to a year of Hebrew!
My name is Andreea Adereth and this is my 10th year teaching Hebrew in the Middle School at Hannah Senesh. Teaching Hebrew as a Second Language is my passion! I look forward to guiding the children on an exciting journey in which they will discover the beauty of speaking a second language and will be able to communicate with Israelis and with Hebrew speakers from the entire world. In addition to teaching Hebrew, I strive to instill in my students a lifelong love for learning and a real connection to Israel, to its people, language, and culture.

Looking forward to meeting everyone soon!
