Trip to Cobble Hill Health Center
Reading
This week both reading groups finished their books! Each group completed a special activity that relates to a part of their book. One group created a chalk garden, based on their book The Chalk Box Kid, and the other group made Kasha Varnishkes based on a part of their book, The Adventures of Ali Baba Bernstein. Then, each group member paired up with one from the other reading group and they talked about their final activities, and discussed each of their books. We have so enjoyed reading these wonderful books, and can’t wait to start new books soon!
Ask your child what they did for their last activity and how it relates to their book!
Math
We finished our unit on money this week, adding and subtracting dollar and cent values, as well as comparing values. We worked on many word problems about buying items, so we decided to take these word problems and make them more real! Each second grader had the chance to create their own restaurant and menu. Then, using Play Doh and Model Magic we crafted our menu items with price tags. We had a blast “eating” at each other’s restaurants.
Next week we will begin learning about fractions. You can start exposing your children to the vocabulary we use when learning fractions like “whole”, “half”, and “quarter over the weekend.
Science
We have a lot going on in science these days as we continue our soil exploration. Students have been monitoring their individual compost bags. The worms are so busy – they have eaten nearly all their food. We even discovered one baby worm this week! Most of the indigo seeds we planted with Iviva sprouted into little plants over the break, so we are also tending them. Many thanks to the families who cared for the worms and to Iviva who cared for the plants over the break.
Social Action Trip to Cobble Hill Health Center
We visited the Cobble Hill Health Center for the third time this year as a class. Sam sang a song and played the ukelele. Lev R., Matan, and Rohan each played a solo on the piano. Six students did a Tae Kwan Do demonstration led by Jacob B. All students walked around afterwards and interacted with the residents. Back at school we read the book Mrs. Katz and Tush about a fiendship that forms between an elderly woman and her neighbor who is a young boy.
