The First Full Week

Hello Fourth Grade Families!
It was a whirlwind of a first full week here at Hannah Senesh. Fourth graders got to demonstrate their leadership skills during lunch by leading the Lower School in Birkat Hamazon, and got to meet their new Kindergarten Buddies. We hope you all enjoy Rosh Hashanah next week and have a sweet New Year!
Shabbat Shalom! -The Fourth Grade Team
PEEK AT NEXT WEEK:
  • Monday, September 18 – Back to School Night
  • Wednesday, September 20-Friday, September 22 – Rosh Hashanah, NO SCHOOL

HEBREW with Ilana:
This week the 4th grade worked om their ID card (Teudat Zehut). They wrote basic information about themselves and what they want for the new year. We also review colors and singular – plural, masculine and feminine conjugation.

Shabbat Shalom!
JUDAIC STUDIES with Aliza:
In Chumash, we learned about the birth of Yitzchak and Rivka’s twin boys, and the mysterious prophecy that surrounds them. We learned about how Yakov was born holding onto Esav’s heel, signifying the beginning of a lifelong rivalry between the two. We also discussed their parents’ favoritism of one twin over the other, and how this might have further pitted them against each other.

In Yahadut, we played a very fun game of Seer, Walker, Builder to illustrate how tradition changes as it gets passed down from generation to generation.

We also learned about the experience of the Days of Awe, and how they encompass all five senses. We used this discussion as a springboard for our first project, Rosh Hashanah Synesthesia. Our Jewish Hero of the Week was Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon (Maimonides).
Shabbat Shalom!

GENERAL STUDIES with Miriam:
We had a very busy and productive first full week of the year. In writing, fourth graders started the workshop model and are writing about true events in their lives. In math, we began our first unit: Whole Numbers and Place Value. We are working all the way up to millions and even hundred millions this year, manipulating and examining these values in all sorts of way. Each student had a reading conference with Miriam this week. They shared a bit about the books they like to read, what they are currently reading and read out loud. It was a nice opportunity to have some one-on-one time with each student and talk about one of Miriam’s favorite things: books! We also had our second Class Meeting this week. Fourth graders made two fabulous requests: changes in their recess routine and they created a system to allow them to earn the ability to read books at lunch. It was VERY impressive!

SCIENCE with Sammi:

Hi! I’m Sammi, the fourth grade science teacher. I am thrilled to be working with the fourth grade team this year! The fourth grade is off to a great start in class. It is so exciting to see them twice a week in the science lab and the art room.

We have begun the year by looking into scientists. First, we discovered that many of us have certain stereotypes in our minds when we think of scientists. When drawing what we thought a scientist looked like, many of our people had crazy hair, were older, were doing some crazy experiment, and they were often men. Through discussion, we decided these stereotypes came from cartoons, tv shows, and Albert Einstein’s fame. We then discussed what scientists do. We decided scientists are people who discover, experiment, question the world around them, solve problems, take careful notes, observe, and help others. We will be adding to this list over the next week as we take time to learn about some current scientists working at the Smithsonian.
