September 17: First Week of School!

Dear Kindergarten Families,

Please be sure to read the whole blog so as not to miss important reminders at the end!

We had a wonderful first week in Kindergarten! Even though we were only in school for 2 ½ days, lots happened during the first week of Kindergarten.  We started each day with a Morning Meeting where we started to get to know each other’s names with a different greeting each day. We sang Willoughby Wallaby and Baby Beluga. We began to learn about all the different routines such as putting our snacks and lunches in the correct spots and putting our backpacks away. There is a lot to learn!!

In General Studies we decorated the pieces of a big K puzzle and put it all back together again.  We decorated picture frames with Sharpies and watercolors to frame beautiful pictures of us to hang in the hallway so everyone can get to know us. We played a math game called Find It and had our first day of Writer’s Workshop. We read three stories: Will I Have a Friend?, Chrysanthemum, and Wemberly Worried. And we had our first Choice Time.  A very popular choice was “Office,” where children use old computers, cell phones, and calculators to pretend they are working in an office.  There was discussion of group chats, phones being low on batteries, and the hours that stores were open!

That’s a lot for 2 ½ days!  We look forward to more Kindergarten adventures next week.

In Hebrew, we learned the word ani (me/I am) to be able to introduce ourselves to each other. We talked about Yom Kippur on Tuesday before the fast, and have begun learning all about Sukkot, learning about the lulav and etrog and the four species. We even began learning a Hebrew song all about Sukkot! We read “On Shabbat” and “Fox Walked Alone”.

This week we had our first Kabbalat Shabbat in which we said the brachot on the candles, wine (grape juice), challah, and netilat yadayim and sang Shabbat songs.

This week the kids had their first P.E. class with Anne and recess in which they learned new games as a group. Next week, the children will have their first Art and Science classes!

Reminders of the week:

  • Please make sure your child has a properly fitted mask that completely covers your child’s nose and mouth. We find that child-sized surgical masks work best for this age.
  • If you have not done so already, please send your child with an extra change of clothes Monday morning.

Shabbat Shalom,

Atalya, Dawn, and Anat
