September 17, 2021 — The Start of Something New

Judaic Studies with Shira

We were so excited to be able to do an actual Tashlich cremony this year outside of school, after not being able to leave school last year.
Fourth graders walked to the Gowanus Canal as a whole class with Shira and Hilary, side-by-side with their “tfilah buddies”, the student they sit next to at whole group tfillah each day. Every student sits next to a student from the other group to give them a chance to interact more with other students.
We collected natural items along the way, such as leaves or acorns, to discard into the canal. Once seated by the canal, we were able to call out the names of the sounds of the shofar blasts, and hear Shira blowing the shofar. We recited the shehechyanu blessing and shared things we were grateful about this year. Wishing all the fourth grade families a Shana Tova!!

Hebrew with Rimma

Dear families,

We are excited to be back. In the first few days we got to know each other and started to build our classroom community and set expectations for the year.

In Hebrew we reinforced writing in cursive and correct decoding. We reviewed numbers and had a discussion about birthdays. We watched a short video and talked about similarities and differences in how birthdays are celebrated in Israel and America. After a short review we are ready to jump to the new unit.

Chag sukkot sameach !

Humanities with Hilary

What an amazing first week it has been, getting to know these wonderful students! So much joy and laughter has filled this classroom, and it has only been THREE DAYS! 😱

We have started to create pieces for our new bulletin board, following our superhero theme (pictures to come for the next blog). We started thinking about our classroom contract, and what we should include in it to make this year be as strong and respectful as we can. We even got two assessments out of the way, so we can move on with our spelling and writing lessons!

Next week, we’re going to start talking about elections (reminder that we have our NYC Mayoral Election this year, so get ready to go out and vote by Tuesday, November 2 [early voting is from October 23 to October 31]). Knowing about our government and civics, how they works, and how we the people can make change is SO important. I’m very excited to begin this unit with this group.

September Dates to Know:

  • Tuesday Sept 21, Wednesday Sept 22 — NO SCHOOL (Sukkot)
