science_kidsHannah Senesh students use all of their senses to observe the world around them. Science classes offer the opportunity for students to sharpen these skills and learn how to use recorded data to make predictions and draw conclusions. Students are exposed to biological, physical, chemical, and environmental sciences. As students broaden their scientific knowledge, concepts introduced in earlier grades are reinforced with increased sophistication. Students in grades 2-8 have class in a science lab, and are taught by a science specialist.

Scientific topics covered in grades K-5 include: plants and ecosystems; organisms; chemical tests; weather; soil; solids, liquids, and gasses; butterflies; food chemistry and nutrition; rocks and minerals; magnets and motors.

Scientific units covered in grades 6-8: Energy, Machines, and Motion (physics); Human Body Systems (biology); Properties of Matter (chemistry).

From an early age, students are taught to record information in lab notebooks and to observe the patterns in their data. Weekly experiments and engaging, hands-on activities encourage active involvement and generate an excitement for the topics studied. Trips to museums, outdoor ecosystems, and research laboratories further enrich the curriculum.

As a school, we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment, and all members of our community are encouraged to “reduce, reuse, and recycle.” Students of all ages explore ways to accomplish these goals, applying their scientific knowledge to come up with creative solutions. The Jewish concepts of bal tashchit (do not waste/destroy) and tikkun olam (repairing the world) inform our discussions and actions.
