Prospect Park Zoo and much more!
Dear Kindergarten Families,
We had an eventful week in Kindergarten! We went to the Prospect Park Zoo and the new playground, and had lots of fun at sports day and sharing our favorite book characters! We also loved watching our fourth grade buddies perform their songs of Israel and America!
In Math, we completed our unit on Weight and Capacity and began learning about coins. We learned about capacity and filled containers with water to measure which had the largest or smallest capacity. We also began to learn about the different values of coins. We sorted coins, played store, tried to identify and match pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. Please play these games with your children at home and let them help you use coins to pay for small purchases!
In English Language Arts, we continued our Author Study of Robert Munsch. The children are eager to read as many of these exciting, funny and unpredictable books as possible. In addition, we wrote letters to our fourth grade buddies congratulating and complimenting them on their amazing performance!
In Social Studies, we learned about the Statue of Liberty. We learned about where she was created and what she stands for. We read fiction and non-fiction books about the landmark.
Hebrew and Judaic
In Hebrew we read and learned about different animals and the children talked about the animals they saw at the zoo (Gan Chayot). We saw a Kelev yam (sea lion), Tziporim (birds), Kof (monkey), Tzav (turtle), tzfardea (frog) and nachash (snake). We read the book “Haaryeh Sheli” by Ami Rubinger and “Sammy Spider’s First Shabbat.” We played letter and word games and continued to draw the many words we learned so far. We also continued learning about the ten commandments. We discussed about rules such as: remember Shabbat is a day to rest and say thank you, listen to your parents and take care of them, do not hurt other people, love and look after everyone in your family, do not take things that belong to other people, do not say things that are not true, be happy with the things that you have. Finally we sang the song “Torah Torah”.
For the last week of school, we will follow the program created by our students:
Monday, June 11 – Pinkalicious or Ninja Day (dress as one of those characters if you wish, we’ll bake cupcakes at school!)
Tuesday, June 12 – Sprinklers Day (If the weather is warm enough – bathing suits, towels, waterproof shoes – if your child wants to play in the water. If it is cool that day, we will walk to Carroll Park)
Wednesday, June 13 – Pajama Day (pajamas, stuffed animals – we will watch the movie “Paperbag Princess” and make ice cream sundaes)
Thursday, June 14 – Backwards Day (you can wear funny hats, backwards clothes, silly hair, etc.)
Friday, June 15 – “Goodbye, Kindergarten” Party at 1:45pm
Have a great weekend!
Shabbat Shalom,
Irit, Rachel, Regina, and Ilana

Art with Iviva:
This week, we started reviewing some of our projects from the school year, including our beautiful watercolor and tempera paintings. We began making portfolio covers so that we can safely carry our work home at the end of the school year. We are proud of all of the new skills we learned, and the artwork we’ve made. Artwork will come home Monday or Tuesday of this week.
