Painted Pot and more fun!
Dear Kindergarten Families,
We had a fun week in Kindergarten! The children had a great time painting our kiddush cups at Painted Pot yesterday! As a special treat, we also went to play at Carroll Park in the morning and it was such a joy to see the children play in the sunshine! Big THANK YOU to all the parents who helped us with the trip: Lana, Corinne, Michelle, Sara and Hila!
In Math, we have continued to learn about parts of a whole. We practiced using a number line to figure out how many more we need to get to 10 or 15: “I have 8, how many do I need to get to 10? to 15?” We were very excited to have finished our third math workbook! Next week, we will begin our final workbook for the year with a unit on Measuring!
In English Language Arts, we continued learning about silent -e. We learned the sound and motion for long /o/ (as in spoke) and practiced reading and matching words with silent e to their pictures.
In Writing, we began our Poetry unit. We have had lots of fun reading each other’s favorite poems and have begun to illustrate some of them for our books. We will be making a few class poetry books: “Down by the Bay,” “Brown Bear, Brown Bear,” and more. The children will also learn to write some short poems starting next week.
In Social Studies, we continued our City Block Unit. As a class, we decided to study the subway and the grocery store. We created a chart with all the things we think we know about our chosen places and the ideas we want to learn more about. We then started exploring the things we know about the subway and grocery store through building, dress up, and art.
In Science, we continued our unit Exploring Plants and Animals. We observed alfalfa seeds, pea seeds, and lima beans. We made predictions about what we think they will look like when they grow, and then we got to plant them! We will continue to make observations as we watch our plants grow!
Hebrew and Judaics
This week we started preparing for the Kabbalat Shabbat celebration by singing and acting the creation of the world and Shabbat. The children continued decorating their Shabbat boxes. On Thursday we went to Painted Pot and made our own Kiddush cups.
We continued counting the Omer (Sfirat Haomer) which is the counting of the 49 days between Passover and the holiday of Shavuot. We sang the song “hineni muchan umezuman” before counting. We read the book “The Shabbat Box” and “Funny Friday” as well as “Chatul Gadol Chatul Katan” and “Pishpesh Mitlabesh” by Ami Rubinger.
In addition, the children continued presenting their families in Hebrew. Every week some kids show family pictures using the phrases “Yesh li Ima , Korim la ___” , or Yesh li Abba, korim lo____” ( I have a mother her name is___, or I have a father his name is_____).
We also reviewed the different animal vocabulary and created a “gan chayot” (a zoo) using the following vocabulary: aryeh- lion, kelev- dog , pil- elefant, arnav- rabbit, chatul- cat, dag- fish, giraffe- girafa, tzav- turtle , barvaz-duck.
