Our Week in Fifth Grade! 11-15-19

Advisory

Can you give the perfect directions to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? That is what the fifth graders tried to accomplish this week. Working in teams, the students created and wrote explicit directions step-by-step to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The teachers then read the directions and followed them… literally. At the end of the activity we compared the sandwiches to see which group gave the best directions.

Math

It was such a pleasure to meet all of you this past week at parent teacher conferences. Last week, 5th grade wrapped up Chapter 2, and this week we will begin Chapter 3, which focuses on fractions. Some things to look forward in this chapter are adjusting recipes, a lot of pizza talk, building a dog house, and running a lemonade stand. It’s going to be a blast! I love fractions, and by the end of this chapter, your children will too!

Science

This week, the 5th graders have continued to learn about air resistance through an online simulation on Explorelearning.com. On this simulation, students were dropping different objects (a ping pong ball, a golf ball, a watermelon, and a soccer ball) off the leaning tower of Pisa to see the speed at which the object falls. They are also able to see what happens when the same objects are dropped with a parachute and they are able to see what happens in a vacuum. With so much to explore, the 5th graders are discovering that air resistance depends on many factors. Finally, they are learning new vocabulary words such as acceleration and terminal velocity.

Humanities

This week we began a research project to further study the seven elements of civilization in Mesopotamia. Each student has been assigned an element of civilization that they will study in-depth and ultimately produce a research essay and a physical rendering. We discussed how to collect research and take notes. Once the notes are collected, we will go through each step of the process to write an informational essay. We look forward to presenting our work to you on December 10 at the fifth grade Conference on Civilizations.

Judaics:
Such exciting drama happening in Judaics this week! We are diving into the Chumash, learning the Joseph story in depth. Students are looking at each word as they translate and asking great questions and kushiyot (text based questions). We are also using the trope and finding repeating words to figure out the tone of the text. We had some very talented actors perform dramatic readings as we brought the voices of Joseph and his brothers alive. We journaled this week about the feeling of hate because the brothers have so much hate for Joseph right now. We thought about how hate has roots like anger, sadness, jealousy, etc. Students shared so nicely about times when they felt hate and how they handled it and how reflecting back they could have handled it better. I look forward to continue the text with them next week!
Shabbat Shalom,

Hebrew
To mark Hannah Senesh’s Yahrzeit, we spoke with students about her life and her songs and poems. They were excited to learn a new poem by Senesh and to be able to discuss it in Hebrew.

We started to learn about the most antique Synagogue in the North of America. The students were introduced to new vocabulary and grammar rules, based on their previous knowledge.
