Our Week in 5th Grade! 9-5-19

We had a wonderful first week of school! Read on to find out more about what we did this week…

Important Dates:

September 12 (Thursday): NYC Challenge- Students will need to be at school by 7:15 AM and will return at 6:45 PM

  • Permission Slip is due September 6th

September 16 (Monday): Back to School Night– 6:45 PM

Advisory:

This week in advisory we interview our teachers to learn more about them and presented our interviews in fun ways to the rest of the middle school during an assembly. We also worked on organization, learning our expectations, safety procedures and the schedule. In addition, we created time capsules that will be opened on the last day of school to see how much we have grown and changed over the course of this year!

Birthdays:

This year 5th graders will have a sign on their locker for everyone to sign and they will get a fun birthday hat! They are invited to bring in kosher dairy or paerve treats for their class- NO THURSDAY treats because of meat day. Students will sing during lunch with the help of their advisor. Please reach out with any questions. Please avoid snacks with nuts.

Humanities:

We had a great first week in Humanities! The new fifth graders have really taken to life in middle school! They have been showing up to class on-time, with their materials and excited to learn! This week we played several games and worked on activities to highlight each fifth graders unique and special self while also thinking about our hopes and goals for the school year. Next week we will dive right into the curriculum by starting our first novel, Wonder, discussion conventions of narrative writing, and exploring community through the book, Seedfolks.

Math:

It’s been an exciting week getting to know each other and learning new routines. We are going to continue working on our originaztion skills and learning the ins and outs of completing group challenges. Next week, we will start Chapter 1, beginning with writing whole numbers in a variety of ways. It’s going to be great!

Science:

It was wonderful to see the 5th graders in the science room again! While we only had 1.5 classes this week, we got started with reviewing the expectations and learning the 5th grade procedures for entering the room. We also completed a “science all about me” activity and “the great materials scavenger hunt” which allowed students to discover how all the materials in the classroom were organized via poems, clues, crossword puzzles, and secret codes.

Judaics:

These students have such ruach (spirit) in tefillah (prayer)! We had an amazing tefillah in class, learning new tunes and sharing experiences related to the words of the prayers. This year we will be learning skills, taking on leadership roles and infusing mindfulness/ meditation into our classroom tefillah on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Each day we will blow the shofar and take a moment of reflection and intention setting as we prepare for the new year. All students will get a chance to try the shofar (don’t worry I have disinfectant).  We also got to know the room with a scavenger hunt that had students already excited to take the books off the shelves during their free time. We will be moving into our mini unit on the blessing for studying Torah. This blessing will be an important part of our class routine. You can look forward to hearing about their Rosh Hashana unit next week!

Shabbat Shalom,

Laura

Hebrew:
It has been a great week with the 5th grade!
We started this year with an introduction section as we got to know each other in Hebrew. We talked about the family, our hobbies, and how was our summer. We read, wrote and learned new words related to the topic.
It was great to see the students working together and using their Hebrew skills after a long summer.
We are off to a great start and I can’t wait to see what this year will bring.
Wishing you all a Shabbat Shalom.
Yuliya Shifrin-Izraev
