November 9: Weeks 9 and 10!
Math
The 7th grade has moved steadily through the world of Real Numbers. Next stop on the math train is an Introduction to Algebra where the students will learn to take everyday situations and produce algebraic expressions and equations from the data.
Believe it or not, people use algebraic expressions and equations in their daily life without realizing they are doing so. When you are buying things at the store and figuring out how much you can spend based on how much money you have, how much change you will receive when you spend money, how much time you need to get to a destination, how much of each ingredient you need to prepare a meal, and how much time you have left to complete a task are some of the many ways Algebra is occurring in your life behind the scenes.
People are not aware of it because they are conditioned to apply problem solving and critical thinking skills to figure things out and aren’t focusing on coefficients, constants, and variables. However, if someone were to take the time to write one of the situations above onto paper in words, an algebraic expression or equation could be produced from it.
Israel Class
We have made it to ACT V of Julius Caesar! We are sorting through the details of the political and social chaos of Rome in 44 BC. I have loved watching students read the play and hear the play. In social studies, we have forged ahead to Rome’s transition from republic to empire. Our current vocabulary roots to look for are:
- Copia – plenty
- Makros – large
- Magnus – great
- Megas – great
- Poly – many
Finally, we had a great session with our buddy class where we shared our writing and listened to some of their writing. We asked them about the writing process they engaged in, and they were curious about our secondary source comparison essay.
