May 14 – May 18

Math

7X finished learning the materials on Unit 13: Volumes and Surface Areas of Solids, and are working on their unit project, making a mobile of solids. This project is due at the beginning of class on Friday, May 25th. The following unit (unit 14) is on Proportions. Reminder: All current incomplete corrections or missing assignments for the second semester should be turned in no later than Wednesday, May 23rd.

7Y started a new unit on Probability of Simple Events (unit 16). On this unit, they will learn to use set language and set notation to describe a set of objects, its elements, its subsets, and its complement; understand probability as a measure of chance; define the terms sample space, outcome, and event; list the sample space for a simple chance situation; and find the probability of a single event. Reminder: All current incomplete corrections or missing assignments for the second semester should be turned in no later than Wednesday, May 23rd.

Humanities

In writing and literature, students continued reading Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. I loved reading aloud with students, as well as hearing them read this pivotal text in their own voices. In history, we continued our research for the Renaissance paper, diving into our drafts, as well as the maze of in-text citations and works cited pages. Next week, we’ll be continuing to write and revise one another’s work. Students finished their grammar work on Quill.org, as well as worked hard while preparing and taking standardized tests. I am proud of the patience, diligence, and focus that 7th grade students displayed during the tests.

Judaic Studies

The 7th graders completed our unit on rabbinic laws around speech by looking at what the rabbis define as “committing fraud with words.” Why is it a problem to ask a storekeeper how much a product costs if you have no intention of buying it? Ask your child!

We are now looking at current events, focusing on the protests in Gaza on the Israeli border. There are two goals in this unit: for students to learn how to educate themselves about a current event: what is a credible source? how can you get a range of perspectives? And second, for students to recognize that the conflict is complicated, and to try to get a sense of the complexity of the questions involved. 7th grade homework, due Tuesday, is to discuss the events on the Gaza/Israeli border with an adult.

Shabbat shalom and chag sameach!
