HUMANITIES
7th graders of been working on two concurring projects in Social Studies and English Language Arts. In Social Studies, students have been researching different ways in which housing insecurity affects our society and our communities. They have diligently been finding useful information to incorporate into letters that they are writing to inform and exhort people not to sit idly by while this problem persists. They are presenting some of their findings to the rest of the school next week while culminating the supply drive they’ve organized.
In ELA, 7E and 7F have just begun the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) process. Each class is beginning to write a collaborative class novel, with the goal of writing 50,000 words. So far, each class has created the foundation for the novel and will start writing their individual chapters in earnest next week.

Dear Parents,

Over the last few weeks, the students have started practicing describing what do various professions have to do. In addition, the students discussed what do good people do and what is the importance of good deeds. Next week we will start reviewing and going deeper in the use of future tense, and we will start using that in order to lead moc job interviews.

במהלך שבוע שעבר עבדנו על האגדה ״יוסף מוקיר שבת״ המבוססת על מסכת שבת קיט א.  בו מסופר על יוסף סבל עני שעבד עבור איכר עשיר אשר היה קמצן. יוסף חי עם משפחתו בצמצום, אך לקראת שבת היה קונה לבני משפחתו מכל טוב. בחלומו של האיכר התגלה מלאך שאמר לו שעתיד הוא לאבד את כל עושרו ליוסף, לאור זאת מכר האיכר את כל נכסיו וקנה יהלום גדול שאותו תפר לכובעו. יום אחד נסחף הכובע למים והיהלום נבלע על- ידי דג. אותו דג עלה בחכה של דיג שהביא אותו למכירה. אשתו של יוסף קנתה את הדג וגילתה לתדהמתה את היהלום. למרות היותם עניים החליטו להשיב את האבידה לאיכר. בתור תודה החליט האיכר לתת את היהלום ליוסף. הטקסט הזה בא ללמד אותנו על חשיבותה של הגינות ונתינה. מההיבט הדתי על חשיבותה של השבת השומרת עלינו.
השבוע התחלנו ללמוד יחידה חדשה על מעמדן של נשים דרך מוזיקה. שוחחנו על אחיות של מלחינים גדולים בהיסטוריה שלא זכו לתהילה. על הדרך הארוכה שהאנושות עברה עד שהכירה בזכויות האישה ועל משמעותה.

MATH

Now that the 7th grade has mastered geometry, they have started exploring statistics. They’ve learned about what makes a data set a fair representation of a population, ways data collection can be biased, and how to use samples to make inferences about populations. Next, they will build on those skills by analyzing data sets and collecting and analyzing data of their own.

SCIENCE

During the past month, the seventh grade has been exploring the science of water. We have done activities to understand how much of the water on earth is fresh water and saltwater. We also broke down the freshwater into key areas like ice, lakes, rivers, groundwater, and swamps. This allowed students to visually see how little of the entire water supply on the planet is useable freshwater. Then we had a rotation activity that had students discover all the properties of water. This included the concept of cohesion, adhesion, polar, reflection, and a few others. Students were shocked to understand all these science concepts of water, in the coming weeks we will start investigating weather and the science behind that concept.
