Kindergarten Blog 5/6/21

Dear Families,

This week in Kindergarten, students began learning subtraction. We played a fun game where students pretended to be cows, and could be sent to either the barn (desks) or the field (floor spots). We told number stories about the cows (For example: there are 4 cows standing in the field. 2 of them go back to the barn. How many are still in the field?). Students had fun practicing subtraction and doing lots of moooovement.

Each pod had a publishing party, at which they had the chance to read their stories to several classmates and two adults. The highlight was perhaps the special snack!  I am working to put together a packet of the year’s writing for each child and will let you know when that is coming home.

At choice time, we have introduced a new card game, Blink, which many have enjoyed playing.  It is one of the first games we play that has a winner, so we have talked about different ways to respond when you win or when you don’t!

In Hebrew/Judaics we are learning about Shavuot. We are counting the omer (the seven weeks between Passover and Shavuot), and learned where the name Shavuot comes from (“weeks”). Kids learned that on Shavuot we eat dairy, because we celebrate the Torah, and the Torah is like milk and honey. We are also reading a book about the seven species, another important part of Shavuot.

Shabbat Shalom,

Talia, Dawn, Anat, and Atalya

Music with Heidi

In Music, Kindergarteners have finished their study of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. Hopefully they shared their knowledge with you! They are now building their pitch and melodic skills through perfecting Doe a Deer. They can’t wait to share it with you at their end-of-year celebration.
