Kindergarten Blog 4/15/21

Dear Families,

This week in Kindergarten, students practiced addition with a new game. Partners were given two cards, one with an animal, one with an equation (ex: Frogs, 2+7= ___). Together, they solved the problem, and came up with a story to fit the animal and the equation (ex: 2 frogs sat on a log. 7 frogs came to join them. All together there were 9 frogs. The end!).

We are also reviewing handwriting steps, and have a brand new tool to use: chalk boards! We use different materials (chalk, sponge, water) to make each letter “the Kindergarten way.” Changing materials helps us to learn in a tactile way. The size of the materials helps us learn to pinch writing implements, which can improve pencil grip. If your student is having fun and wants to practice at home, there is an iPad App called “Wet Dry Try” (Learning Without Tears) that uses the same method we do in school.

his week the students learned about Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israeli Independence Day). The students learned about what it is like to be independent and the meaning of the word. Each student shared with the class what makes them independent and what they can do on their own.
We learned about the flag of Israel and what colors make up the flag. They did an arts and crafts project of creating the Israeli flag and the Magen David and really enjoyed themselves! They learned about the symbol of Israel, which is the menorah and two olive branches. The students also enjoyed Israeli snacks such as Bisli and Pesek Zman!
In Hebrew/Judaic studies, we started learning about Shabbat and they learn parashat hashavua each week.
Vocabulary:
יום העצמאות independent day
סמל symbol
דגל flag
מדינה state

In writing children have chosen a story to work on for our next publishing party.  We have two new tools to help with revising stories. A green flair pen is used to add missing letters, spaces between words, periods, and more details.  Small strips of lined paper are used to add sentences when there is no more room on a page.  Revising is hard work for Kindergartners, and we repeat a lot, “When you are done you have just begun!”

In reading children continue to do both independent and partner reading.  They are beginning to retell what has happened in the books they have read. In another big step for Kindergartners we have started our first read aloud chapter book, Ramona the Pest by Beverly Cleary.  Children have been very engaged as they hear about Ramona’s first day of Kindergarten in which she has a big misunderstanding with her teacher and also gets benched for pulling another child’s hair (really, she just wanted to see the long long curl boing back up). We are having lots of fun with the book.  Beverly Cleary has written many other books about Ramona including Beezus and Ramona and Ramona the Brave which you might like to try at home.

Music with Heidi
In Music, now that Kindergarteners have a good sense of the sections and instruments of the Orchestra, they are refining their auditory recognition of instruments through a study of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. Students have been having a great time matching up the characters to their instruments and themes. We have also continued our study of solfège and the singing of Doe a Deer.
