Kindergarten Blog 3/12/21

Dear Families,

It’s been an exciting and artistic week in Kindergarten!
In math, students decorated their own Hundreds Charts, and practiced how to use them. We also played a game about ordering numbers. Kids were each given a card with a number on it (shuffled!), and then had to rearrange themselves so that their numbers were in order!
We are also learning how to tie our shoes! Students each have a paper shoe to keep at school, and are able to practice tying the laces at points throughout the day. If you would like to practice at home, remind your student of these steps (we are using the bunny ears method).
1) Make an X
2) Pull the top lace under, and through the triangle
3) Make the bunny ears — remember that they need to be close to the middle of the shoe
4) Make an X with the bunny ears
5)  Pull one ear under and through

In Writing, Kindergartners are continuing to work on their true stories about something that has happened to them.  We continue to add details to make the stories more interesting and to talk about ways to make writing easier for the writer and the reader to read!  This week we talked about periods, question marks, and exclamation points, You may start to see a lot of exclamation points in your child’s writing! We also looked at the two different types of letters (upper case and lower case) and noticed that all sentences start with an upper case letter.

In reading we have practiced reading with a partner.   We have tried two different types of partner reading.  In Seesaw Reading, one partner reads the first page and the other partner reads the second page and they keep alternating.  In Echo Reading one partner reads a page and the other partner reads the same page, and then they switch.  You might try this at home.
And just for the fun of it, on Thursday we celebrated the beautiful weather by making mini kites and taking them outside to fly them!
In Hebrew, we are learning about spring! We talked about how the weather changes, how our clothing changes, and how we feel about the warmer weather! We also talked about the colors we see outside in spring, in flowers and other things. We are reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar and learning about the life cycle of butterflies. We talked about the days of the week and what the caterpillar ate each day. We also crafted our own caterpillars! We also continued our Shabbat unit in Judaic Studies and discussed the Parashat haShavua (Vayakel Pikudi).

Music with Heidi

In Music this week, Kindergarteners reviewed the String, Woodwind and Brass Sections. Then they learned about the Percussion Section of the Orchestra and a wide variety of percussion instruments beyond the instruments of the orchestra. Students also read and performed body percussion to “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley.
