Kindergarten Blog 12/10

Dear Kindergarten Families,

This week we celebrated the end of Chanukah, made veggie chili and corn muffins, and walked the food we made and extra produce down to the community fridge.

In our Morning Meetings, the students have taken on deciding how we greet each other as well as what our share topic would be. In Wednesday’s share, we discovered that the most popular favorite shape is a circle! We continue to sing our favorite songs and work on learning new ones. We also had the chance to see the pictures and videos of our Celebration of Learning.

In Math we are working on the concept of Counting On.  After rolling two dice we practiced saying the number that was on one die and counting on the dots on the second die to get the total. Then we counted all the dots to see if we got the same answer.  Some also practiced counting on from ten. We also did an activity called Counting Jars, where children carefully counted the items in a jar and represented them with both pictures and numbers.  Finally, we learned a new attribute game called Blink.

In Science this week, we learned all about Taste. We learned about why we taste (to know what is safe to eat), and that taste buds are the parts of our tongue responsible for tasting. We discussed different tastes like sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and spicy. As our (very popular) experiment, each child got one of each flavor of Mike and Ikes, five in all, and had to guess what all the flavors were. We then learned how much smell has to do with taste, and to test this we did another experiment: holding our noses to plug them, the children each began chewing a Mike and Ike, and then unplugged their noses to find how much more flavorful the candy is when we use our sense of smell! What other foods have a stronger taste when we use our sense of smell? Try it out at home!

In Handwriting, we learned how to write S, which was our very last handwriting letter! We also reviewed our Frog Jump letters, as well as C, G, O, and Q.

In Hebrew, we read a story about morning routines, learning some new vocabulary: seder yom/seder sheli (schedule of the day/my schedule), lehitorer (wake up), lishtof panim (wash face), lirchotz (wash), eich at(a) mit’orer(et) baboker? (How do you wake up in the morning?), sha’on (clock). We continued with our family unit, and the children are practicing listing their family members/who is in their family, and everyone’s names.

In Judaic Studies, the children painted their own renditions of the fourth day of Creation. The vocab for this day is: shemesh (sun), yareach (moon), and kochavim (stars). The Parshat HaShavua (Torah portion of the week) is Vayigash (to meet).

We are learning new Shabbat songs to incorporate into our Kabbalat Shabbat.

Shabbat Shalom,

Atalya, Anat, and Dawn
