Kindergarten Blog 1/7

Dear Kindergarten Families,

Happy New Year! We were all so excited to see each other after the break. The children are settling back into our school routines, refreshed from Winter break, with lots of stories to share (some of which are making appearances during Writing Workshop).

In Social Studies we began our study of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Our focus will be on the unfair laws surrounding the rights of people of color in our country and the work that Dr. King did to change those laws.  We will also talk about his belief in non violence.  We will learn a song called The Dream of Martin Luther King to sing at the Tekes scheduled for January 14.

In Science, we had our second lesson in Forces In Motion, and made careful predictions and observations about how differently marbles and wooden balls roll on different surfaces, noting which surfaces are easier to roll on (tile, smoothe mat), and which surfaces present challenges (bumpy mat). The important new word we learned is friction.

The children have begun a new unit in Hebrew/Judaics all about Tu B’shevat, the birthday of the trees. We are having discussions on why we take the time to celebrate trees and why we are grateful for them, learning new vocabulary for different fruits, and pairing our conversations with our unit on Winter. Along with our new weather and clothing vocabulary for Winter, we have begun conversations about growth and seasonal change.

We concluded our week with our very first Kabbalat Shabbat in the new year.

Shabbat Shalom,

Atalya, Dawn, and Anat
