Kindergarten Blog 1/22/21

Dear Kindergarten Families,

Welcome back, and Happy New Year!

Kids and teachers were so happy to see each other back in person this week!

In math, we are beginning to work with number sentences. Number sentences are similar to addition, but we talk about them in different ways, so that we can better make friends with numbers. This week, kids wrote sentences like: “2 and 3 is 5.” and “2 and 6 make 8.” We learn different strategies to pair numbers together and find out what they make. For example, we might ask, “What do 3 and 3 make?” Kids are learning to put three fingers up on one hand, three fingers up on the other hand, and then bring them together and count how many fingers are up, all together. If you want to play a version of the dice game at home, write on a piece of paper or whiteboard : “2 and ___ is____.” Have your student roll a die to figure out what number you are pairing with 2 (this number goes in the first blank). Then your student can figure out the answer! If they get stuck, have them draw dots for each number, then count how many dots they have, all together. During remote learning, as you may know, kindergarteners worked with making patterns. Check out some of the patterns we made below!

We have started new units in both Reading and Writing.

In Reading we are doing a unit on super powers and becoming super readers.  Super powers we have covered so far are picture power (looking at the picture for clues), reread power (reading pieces over and over), snap word power (looking for snap words and other words we know well), and pointer power (pointing to each word as you read).  Each child received a special pointer to use for pointer power.
In Writing we are working on Show and Tell Books about favorite places.  We continue to focus on adding lots of detail to our pictures and being brave spellers as we sound out and record the letters (beginning, middle, and end) that we hear.

Shabbat Shalom,

Talia, Dawn, Anat, and Atalya

Music with Heidi
In Music, Kindergarteners continue to work on their rhythm reading, saying and playing. This week, we had fun listening to, moving to and playing the drum parts of “Hail to the Chief,” the Presidential Anthem, a march that has been played for Presidents on Inauguration Day and other important occasions for over 200 years.
