Kesher Day and Lag Ba’omer

Kesher Day General Studies Activity

For Kesher day in the general studies class we began by talking about a growth mindset and how we can help ourselves when we are having strong feelings. We read the book Beautiful Oops by Barney Saltzberg, a story about all the different mistakes that can happen on a piece of paper like tears, holes, spills, and stains, and different ways to fix them. We described the author’s message about what we can do when we make a mistake, like stay calm and think creatively. Then, our special guests for Kesher Day were asked to make a big “oops!” on a piece of paper, and the second graders had to turn the mistake into something creative. We had a blast being artistic with all these guests and letting our imaginations run free!

Ask your child what the “oops” they had to change was and what they made it turn into!

Writing

This week we worked on our adapted fairy tales and discussed the changes we could make that might lead to other changes in our story. Many of us chose to change the main character from a princess to something more modern like a rapper, sports star, or even an animal!  We also thought about endings to fairy tales, and whether our main characters will have a “happily ever after” ending.

Over the weekend, head to the library and read some fairy tales to help your child have even more ideas for their writing pieces!

Lag Ba’omer in the Park!

Second graders have been counting the days of the omer since we came back to school after Pesach. Now that they know Gematriyah so well, they can explain to you what the name “Lag Ba’omer” means. On Wednesday we read a book called “Sadie’s Lag Ba’Omer Mystery” about a sister and brother trying to solve the mystery of what we celebrate on Lag Ba’omer, and on Thursday we joined the rest of the school in a day of fun at the park. Here are some more pics from yesterday!
