Hello Fourth Grade Families

General Studies with Mike:

It was great having the chance to chat with so many of you at conferences last week! I look forward to meeting with more families this coming Monday!

This week in math class, we wrapped up our math unit on decimal place values. Students can now identify numbers up to the hundredths place. They can also translate fractions to decimals (and vice versa) by creating equivalent fractions with 10 or 100 as the denominator. Students breezed through this unit and are well prepared to begin computing with decimals in the coming weeks as we enter a new chapter adding and subtracting decimals.

Late last week and early this week, students finished their book club books and wrote book reports to end the unit. Our next book club unit will begin next week, and students will shift back to historical fiction texts, reading stories set during the time period of the Civil War.

In social studies, we wrapped up our unit on the Revolutionary War. Students spent the week working on large newsletters about the causes of the war. Students revisited standard essay format to draft a news article for the piece and have enjoyed creating word games, advertisements, comic strips, and illustrations to include in their newsletters. Some students are bringing their work home this weekend as the project is due on Monday morning. Next week, we will embark on the Oregon Trail unit.

The Red Group enjoyed their visit on Monday to the Brooklyn Autism Center. Many students were initially nervous about meeting their new buddies, but their nerves calmed as they began to play games, participate in science projects, and make craft projects. Our session ended with a parachute activity involving all of the students present. I’m sure the Yellow Group will have an equally exciting trip next week.

If you get a chance, visit the bulletin board outside of the classroom and play our Guess the Homophones game. Inspired by our recently finished read aloud “Rain Reign” by Ann M. Martin, students enjoyed the challenge of depicting homophones using only illustrations. Can you guess the homophones?

Hebrew with Ilana S.:

This week the fourth grade were excited starting to work on a project of Yom Shuk – Market Day. The students chose what they want to bring to the market and they searched and  wrote an information about the product they want to bring. Next week they will work on a poster; put all the information, add pictures and an add. On Wednesday, March 27th we will do the Market Day. your child suppose to bring some food to give samples to taste for the class after presenting his/her project.

Fourth grade independently decided to finish the class with relaxing pose.
