Happy Hanukkah from the 8th Grade!

Happy Hanukkah!

Humanities

Students are finishing their Crucible projects and looking forward to their showcase with parents and family on Tuesday, December 15 at 1PM. Join us on zoom for this wonderful display of the students’ performances or creative projects tied to their reading of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. In our study, students have explored dynamic and static characters and tracked their development over the course of the play.

Additionally, on Tuesday, students had their second meeting with Jewish elders from around America. Students connected with their elder partners via zoom and shared their experiences of Hanukkah and growing up Jewish. It was such a treat!

Science

Science continued to explore molecules, reactions, bonds and other concepts in chemistry. During one of our experiments students discovered if the reaction rate is increased due to temperature. We used an assortment of simulation software to continue discovery chemistry during our unique pandemic educating situation. As we wrap up the unit and semester we continue to work on understanding these difficult concepts. Their hard work and dedication has been showcased in all their assignments, activities and experiments. Cannot wait to continue our discoveries of new science topics next semester.

Math

The 8th grade has spent the last few weeks mastering equations and inequalities. Whether doing it through tasks on Mathspace, supplemental work on Khan Academy, or battling monsters by solving math problems on Prodigy, they have been hard at work!

For the past week, they have been learning about the overall properties of functions before moving onto more in-depth work on different types of functions. The first type of function they will be learning about are Linear Functions!

Judaic Studies

We finished the Torah! We finished the Torah! The 8th graders completed their study of the book of Devarim/Deuteronomy. We focused on Moshe’s worries about the transition ahead — will Bnai Yisrael stay humble or will they become arrogant and self-satisfied? Will they be able to handle the increased independence? Will they resist the bad influences around them? Students connected these worries to their own thoughts about the impending transition to high school. We ended the unit with an art project. The 8th graders chose a favorite pasuk/verse and illustrated it using either Japanese Notan techniques or torn paper collage, explaining their design choices with a written artist’s note. Their work is gorgeous

Happy Hanukkah and Shabbat shalom!
