Great First Week Back!

Dear Third Grade Families,

What an exciting first week we had! Throughout their time in the General Studies room, students were not only able to to get to know their teachers, but also to learn more than they thought they knew about each other. As students played  “Get to Know You Bingo” they learned fun facts such as, a few students play musical instruments (such as violin, piano and ukulele), some are pet owners (one of whom named the new puppy “Fluffy), many love to read, and many enjoy playing sports (such as soccer and volleyball). While we are a room of people with varied strengths and interests, we are a strong community of curious learners.

In reading, we worked on what independent reading looks like and what we – as community members – need to remember to do to ensure that everyone is able to concentrate. We discussed that when you need to walk around the room, such as to go pick a new book, you need to do so quietly. Our class amazed the teachers with their dedication to reading and how steady and focused they were as they read!

This week, we slowly introduced our curriculum as well as materials. The highlight for our Third Graders was the opportunity to have a personal desk! We enjoyed investigating how it opens, the secret location of the pencil, and where our notebooks and folders are stored. As a class, we discussed how to best open/close our desks, so as to not be a distraction to those around us.

On Thursday, we explored the math materials that are offered in our classroom. We discussed the purpose of these materials, and how certain materials make more sense than others. For instance, we have both unit cubes (for place value work and a manipulative to support addition and subtraction) as well as place value discs. One students believed that “the discs are harder to count by, because while it says a number on it they are harder to count or add on.” Another student agreed by adding that “when you put the 10s unit rods up against the 1s unit cubes, you can see how many you have,” but that it wasn’t as easy to keep track of your counting with the discs.

As seen, we have been working hard every day this week. The Third Grade Team is looking forward to a great year ahead!

Welcome to Third Grade Judaics!

We kicked off the year by getting to know our Judaics classroom, decorate our new supplies, and learn about one of the most exciting parts of our new curriculum – the Shoresh game. Students compiled a list of Hebrew Shoreshim (word roots) that we will need in our first page of Chumash, and are learning them to play our Shoresh game (stay tuned!) We also heard a funny story about being brave in the face of new experiences, and started our unit on folktales from the city of Chelm.
Hebrew with Ilana

It was an amazing first week in 3rd grade Hebrew class. We played Hebrew games to get to know each other, and scavenger hunt to get familiar with their materials and objects in class. We practiced the routines and we discussed and worked on class rules related to our school values. We created list of rules in Hebrew that the students drew symbol for each one  and we put the rules and their symbols on poster board signed by the students. In addition, the students met our new Sinshinim and had a great time with them playing Israeli games and get to know them.

Shabbat Shalom,
The Third Grade Team
