First Grade News: Week of May 7th
This week the first graders found out the winner of the Irma Black Awards. The winner is “7 ate 9” by Tara Lazar. We reread it to celebrate!
In Science we used venn diagrams to compare and contrast aquariums and terrariums. Next week, first graders will create giant murals depicting our aquariums and terrariums. This week they sketched how it will look and brainstormed a list of materials.
First grade mathematicians revisited addition with regrouping this week. We remembered how to add the ones place first, and then the tens. First graders continued practicing adding using the vertical algorithm.
Our school psychologist, Karen, came into our classroom to do a puppet show. The theme of this week’s show was gratitude. After the show, first graders all shared things they’re grateful for in their lives and thanked those who help them in school.
First graders continued writing poetry this week. They have enough poems for their own anthologies! We studied mentor poets and noticed how they use repetition and patterns to convey feelings. We also learned about using a thesaurus to find precise words for our poems.
We had a very busy week in our Hebrew classroom. Our Siddur Ceremony is just a few days away and the first graders have been busy practicing and preparing for the big day! We also learned about different types of chanuyot (stores). The Students wrote what we can find in each store using all the vocabulary that we have learned during the year. They were so impressed with how many Hebrew words they knew! Their beautiful chanuyot posters are on our bulletin board.
In Parasha, we learned about Parashat Behar-Bechukotai. It’s the last Parashah of the book of Vayikra. We reviewed some of the laws and rules that God teaches the Jewish people and we spoke about the importance of making good choices.
Shabbat Shalom!
