First Grade News: Week of May 14th
We finished up our poetry unit this week by revising and editing our poems. First grade poets read their poems aloud and listened for line breaks. They rewrote their poems and used watercolor paints to make them look like poems out of our poetry books. First graders were excited to display these poems at their siddur ceremony!
First grade mathematicians continued to practice addition with regrouping and even started subtraction with regrouping. We remembered how to add or subtract the ones place first, and then the tens. First graders continued practicing adding using the vertical algorithm.
In Social Studies, first graders learned more about taking care of our earth. They learned about which materials we recycle and which recycling bin to use. To practice these skills, we had a recycling relay where first graders recycled trash in the appropriate bins.
In Science, first graders used all of their knowledge about aquariums and terrariums to create large murals of each. Students collaborated to ensure each mural included everything we’ve learned about aquariums and terrariums.
This week in Art, first graders made collages based on the Malawian proverb “love is in the hands.” They traced their hands on colored paper and used them to make colorful collages with traditional malawian cloth and scrap paper. Later in the week, we wrote a class poem based on the proverb. First graders discussed what it could mean and thought of all the different ways we can show love. Their poems and collages are outside our classroom!
We celebrated how much we have learned this year with the Siddur Ceremony! It was such a special event! We were so proud of all of the first graders and what an amazing job they did! They enjoyed sharing and reading their notes from their friends and family. Here’s a slideshow from their performance.
We also learned about Shavuot! On Shavuot we are celebrating the time that we received the Torah. We spoke about how the Torah has rules (The Ten Commandments) that keep us safe just like rules we have at home and school. We read a story in Hebrew about way God choose Mount Sinai for the Jewish people to receive the Torah.
Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sameach!
