First Grade News: Week of June 4th
In Math, we finished our introduction into multiplication and division. First graders showed off their knowledge of multiplication by making skyscraper arrays! We then began to learn about money. This week we learned the value of coins, and practiced counting money. We played two new math games: race to one dollar, and money compare.
In Social Studies we learned about different ways to reduce our energy consumption. We reread a favorite book from Kindergarten, “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.” It’s the true story of a boy who lived in Malawi and taught himself to build a windmill. In doing so, he brought energy to his village. In our classroom we learned how to get energy from the sun by building a solar oven out of a pizza box. We made nachos in our oven!
In word work, we go our last poems of the year! First graders all brought home their poetry books.
We started Readers Theater in reading groups. We mixed up our reading groups so first graders would get a chance to read with new friends. Readers Theater gives students the opportunity to practice reading with fluency and expression. Each reading group is practicing a different play. We’ll perform these mini plays for each other next week!
Shabbat Shalom!
