First Grade News

Hello Families,

We have had a wonderful start to our year! First grade has focused on creating an inclusive, kind community as we get to know each other better.

We are discussing our identity and what makes us similar, different, and special. We read “The color of us”, “I don’t want curly hair”,  “The skin you live in”, and “We are all welcome here” to explore this topic further and start rich discussions.  In reading, we practiced finding syllables, rhymes, and words we know in our names through the rhymes “Hickety Pickety Bumble Bee” and “Willaby Wallaby Woo”. And in Hebrew, we discussed the meaning of our names.  We also learned about the shapes of our faces and how to make the color of our skin to make our self-portraits. We used sharpies, crayons, and watercolor paints to make a mixed-media portrait.

In Hebrew,we learned the letters alef and tav as well as our first vowel, which makes the “Ah” sound. And what sound the letters alef and tav make when you add this vowel. We reviewed some words that started with the letters alef and tav like; arnav (bunny), aron (closet), aviron (airplane), agas (pear), arye (lion)tapuz (orange), tapuach (apple), tarnegolet (chicken) and tof (drum) and started to add words to our word wall.

In Yahadut, we started learning about Rosh Hashanah. We discussed how Rosh Hashanah is the world’s birthday and learned some of the important symbols of this special holiday, which are apples, honey, the shofar, a pomegranate, and a round challah.

In Tefila, we spoke about the meaning of Tefila (praying). We decorated our Siddurim (prayers book) covers and made the first two pages of our Siddur. The first one is about the prayer modeh ani. Each student shared about what he\she is thankful for and the second one is  about the prayer mah tovu. We discussed what must happen in our classroom/home so it will be a good place. Everyone did a beautiful job!
