First Grade News

Hello Families,

In writing workshop, our opinionated 1st graders have been convincing us which item in their collection is the best! They line up their collection, compare the same thing on each item (best memory, best shape, best pattern, coolest outfit, etc), pick the best item, and give us reasons why. We learned that we need to convince our readers by giving many reasons, examples, and details.  To convince effectively, we are learning to say transitional phrases and words such as “for example”, “I think that because”, “also”, and “another reason is”. At home, please point out when kids are trying to convince you! Practice developing an argument.  This language will help us develop our writing!

In phonics, we have started to investigate common bloopers 1st graders make in their writing and how to fix them.  A common 1st-grade blooper is misspelling words with R-controlled vowels. We located words with the sound “ar”, “ir/ur/er”, and “or” in poems and books. Then we practiced making new words, doing a word hunt, using them in mixed-up sentences, and spelling out tricky words.

In Science, we are continuing our pepper project.

This week, students made observations about our pepper seeds as we watched them germinate. Some student observations include:
“They look like tadpoles”
“The roots got longer”
“They are yellow and brown”
On Friday, we planted some of the seeds in small pots.We reviewed things plants need to grow: water, soil, sun, and air (and as some students added, love!). We will continue to make observations as the plants grow over the next few weeks.
We had a very busy week in our Hebrew classroom. Our Siddur Ceremony is just a few days away and the first graders have been busy practicing and preparing for the big day! We continue traveling through the state of Israel! We traveled all the way to the mountains of Jerusalem. As part of their stop in Jerusalem, each student made their own kotel (Western Wall) out of construction paper. They wrote notes, about their hopes and wishes, to put in their kotel. We visited the Dead Sea (yam hamelach) and the city of Eilat. We spoke and wrote sentences about what was so special about those places. Each first grader wrote a blessing for their grownups, where they beautifully shared their hopes and wishes. We look forward to sharing all their work with you at our Siddur Ceremony.
Lag B’Omer is next Thursday, May 19th. If you have not already done so, please fill out the permission form so your child can attend. Today we sent home notes with your child’s team color!
Shabbat Shalom,
Liz, Talia, and Ilana
