First Grade News

Dear Families,

In math, we are beginning geometry. First graders have been working on identifying and using flat shapes: square, rectangle, trapezoid, triangle, circle, rhombus and pentagon. This week, we played a guessing game, where students had to figure out which shape was being described using clues. For example, I have four corners and four sides. All my sides are the same size. What am I? Answer: A square!  Students are also working on recognizing geometric shapes in the real world around them. Check out pictures of our shape work below!

In science, students are expanding their knowledge about weather, and how to track it. We have begun keeping a weather graph, we are each group can record the days weather and we can see changes over time. Students are also keeping their own weather journals, where they record the date, the weather they observe, and the temperature! We are learning to read thermometers to help us record the weather more accurately.

In Hebrew, we learned the letter gimel and added lots of words to our word wall like: geshem (rain), gesher (bridge), ginah (garden), gezer (carrots), garbyim (socks) and gamal (camel). We wrote lots of sentences using all the action words that we have learned so far.

In Tefila, we learned a new prayer from the amidah called, goel yisrael. We spoke about the land of Israel and what we know about it, and we added another page to our sidurrim.

Shabbat Shalom,

Talia, Ilana, Liz, and Noa
