First Grade News

Hello Families,

In Hebrew, we learned the letter dalet. We added new words to our word wall like: delet (door), devora (bee), dov (bear), devek (glue) and dag (fish). The first graders were so proud to write full sentences in Hebrew for the first time using the action words kana (to buy for boy), kanta (to buy for a girl), raah (to see for a boy) and raatah (to see for a girl). We continued to practice our reading with all the letters that we have learned so far.

In Yahadut, we continued working on our siddurim and learned a new prayer from the amida called hael hakadosh, which we thank God for the holy thing (siddur, mezuzah, etc.) and times (Shabbat, chagim, etc.) in our life. We also spoke about the Sigd, the Ethiopian Jewish holiday that falls 50 days after Yom Kippur and celebrates the receiving of the Torah and we read the book “What Makes Someone a Jew?”.

This week Parasha is Toldot, which is about Jacob receiving Isaac’s blessing. We talked about how these two brothers were very different from each other, but that they also had a few similarities. We had the opportunity to interview someone in our class and learn about our similarities and differences.

In science we finished up our water cycle —weather unit we by creating rain sticks! We are now experts on the water cycle. Ask us questions!

In music, each pod of 1st Graders is using the rhythms they know to write a class rap. They had a lot of fun this week brainstorming words that go with specific rhythms and rhythms that are found in words. They also experienced the joys and challenges of writing music collaboratively.
In reading we have been learning habits to solve hard words such as using the pictures, look at all parts of the word, double checking our word to make sure it looks right and makes sense, and trying vowel sounds two different ways – both long and short to see what makes sense.  We also have been studying snap words and will start to bring home words to study on Monday in our book bags. It is so wonderful to hear kids share about the reading they do at home.  Keep it up!
In writing students have continued to bring their stories to life.  Kids are showing and writing how their characters feel, think, move and talk.  We have also been practicing ways to spell tricky words by using snap words we know (ex. If I know an, I can spell ran) and stretching words out to hear all the sounds (say it, slide it, hear it, write it).
Shabbat Shalom,

The First Grade Team
