First Grade News

Hello Families,

In Hebrew, we learned the letters yod and lamed. We kept practicing our reading and writing with all the letters that we have learned so far. We added new words to our word wall like: yahm (ocean), lechem (bread), lashon (tongue) and lev (heart). We also read and write so many words like: mayim (water), bayit (house), kal (easy, light), ayal (deer) and balam (stopper).

In Yahadut, we learned about the amidah prayer. We learned about the meaning of the prayer, when to bow, and how we stand. We talked about our forefathers (Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov) and our foremothers (Sarah, Rivkah, Rachel and Leah) and we added one more page to our siddurim.

In Parashah, this week we learned the Lech Licha story where God tells Avraham to leave his home to go to a new land. We thought about how Avraham might have felt and realized that he had a lot of faith and trust in God.

This week in science we focused in on precipitation! We utilized the rain to create umbrella tops. We also made stain glass raindrops to match our umbrellas.

In math we starting learning a new strategy to make addition easier. Counting on is so much fun! Soon we will be learning how to count down with subtraction.

In writing this week we started the next chapter of our small moment unit – Bringing our stories to life – where we focus on writing craft.  This week we worked on bringing our characters alive by sketching them with action and making them talk on the lines as well as in speech bubbles. We will practice breaking our stories into itsy-bitsy steps next week.

In social studies we counted up our votes and graphed and analyzed our data.  Here are our new class names – 1A is the dolphins, 1B is the eagles, and 1C is the leopards.  We also read “I Voted” and discussed ways we can help our communities and people make choices even if we cannot vote yet.

*Next week on Monday, students will start bringing their book baggies home to practice reading just right books.
