First Grade News

Hello Families,

In Hebrew this week, we learned the letters reish and what sound she makes when we add the “Ah” sound. Then we practiced our reading and we were able to read and write lots of words with the letters that we have learned so far like; mar (bitter), tamar (date) and ram (high). We added new words to our word wall like; rimon (pomegranate), rakevet (train) and raashan (grager).

In Yahadut, we learned about the holiday of Sukkot. We spoke about the four species and how they are similar in shape to parts of the human body (lulav – the spine, etrog – the heart, hadas – the eye and arava – the mouth). We learned the rules for building a sukkah and each first grader made their own sukkot museum .We also worked on the shema and the meaning of the prayer and we added one more page to our siddurim. Our siddurim are looking beautiful and we cannot wait to continue to fill up our pages with prayers.

In science we are finishing up our unit about the five senses and changing gears towards weather. Perfect timing too, as it’s now Fall!! We are excited to start tracking weather patterns and observe the outside temperature. This will require us to go on short “nature” walks—so make sure to remember your coat as it get colder!

First grade focused on their hopes and dreams for the year this week.  We discussed what we love about school and what we hope to do in first grade.  We made a plan for our pictures and writing.  We then went back and added a “why” sentence to our hopes and dreams and more details to our pictures.  Then we fancied them up!

Please send Liz your hopes and dreams for your child by email if you haven’t yet.

Shabbat Shalom
