First Grade News

We were so excited to welcome everyone back after the break. First graders transitioned seamlessly into new groups. This week we reviewed rules and routines, learned more about one another, and dove right back into our curriculum!

We took the opportunity of a new calendar year to revisit the hopes and dreams we made at the start of the year. In the spirit of making New Year’s resolutions, we all made new goals for the rest of the year.

We read the book “The Most Magnificent Thing” by Ashley Spires. It’s about a girl who has a vision to make something and perseveres until it’s done the way she wants it. We took this opportunity to remember that making mistakes helps us learn, and we need to be brave and take risks. To honor this idea we made a large banner with the words “We are a risk taking, mistake making, community.” This banner will hang in our classroom for the rest of the year.

First grade mathematicians studied length and non standard units of measurement. They had so much fun measuring things in our classroom using paper clips, straws, and snap cubes.

We continue to be word detectives in our phonics lessons. We’ve been studying all the different ways to use the “silent e,” and we noticed that it’s not often used in words with the long e sound. We studied the books in our book bags and noticed that words with the long e sound are often spelled “ee” or “ea.”
