First Grade News

Hello Families,

We have been very busy practicing and preparing for our Siddur ceremony the last few weeks!

In math, we have learned the value of coins and practiced counting money. When counting a group of coins, we learned to sort, start with the biggest ones, trust them in different patterns, and make groups (of 5s, 10s, 100s, etc.). We learned the value of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters and practiced exchanging money using various combinations of coins. Our challenge next week will be to count a big bag of coins together by making a plan, being efficient, and checking our work! Math groups are also continuing to build fluency in adding and subtracting using various strategies such as counting on, making 10, adding doubles, and adding 10s and then 1s.

Our scientists have begun to study plants, and we set up our pole bean seeds to germinate in Ziploc bags on the window. We will observe how well the seeds sprout in a sunny window and indirect sunlight. Next week we will plant them in the soil!

Like fortune cookies, we have discovered that stories have a message or life lesson. After reading a book, we have been thinking about the problem and solution of the book and then what the characters learned from the experience. We noticed there could be many lessons in one book! First graders are starting to leave life lesson messages in books we read for others to discover.

Shabbat Shalom,

Liz and Ilana
