First Grade News

Hello Families,

In Hebrew, we spent time learning about clothing and what we wear. We learned the verbs lovesh (to wear, masculine) and loveshet (to wear, feminine). We also learned how to write the letters chaf, kaf, final chaf, pey and fey in script.

In Yahadut, we started to learn about Purim. We read the story of Purim and got to look at a very small megilah that belongs to the first grade. We spoke about all the things that we do to celebrate Purim – giving Mishloach Manot, gifts to the poor, reading the megilah, and of course, having fun and eating! We are looking forward to celebrating Purim together next week!

In Parasha, we learned about Parashat Tetzaveh. We spoke about the people who worked at the mishkan – the Kohanim and the Kohen Gadol and thought about a special job that we have, just like the special job of the Kohanim.

In Math, we have been continuing to learn about place value and how zero is a place holder. We played a counting game where we arranged three types of pasta representing the ones, tens, and hundreds placed on a place value chart. Kids challenged their partners to look at how many hundreds, tens, and ones were on the chart and write the number and visa versa. In their math books, first graders also practiced counting numbers using 10s and 1s and recording numbers in place value charts.

Our classrooms were also abuzz with counting to 100 for our 100th-day celebration!  Thanks for your help sending in a collection of 100 items. Students have been counting the days of school since the very beginning of the year, using paper clips to help track our process. In the morning, we celebrated with the kindergarteners by using a 100s chart to count out ten pieces of 10 ingredients to make a trail mix of 100 pieces of food, building structures using 100 building blocks, and decorating 100’s posters. First graders also explored how to put hundreds of chart puzzles together and then shared their 100-day collections in an exciting way or groupings (10s, the 20s, 25s, and 50s)!

Check out our pics! We also included pictures from the week before the break from pajama day and reading with the 7th graders.

Shabbat Shalom,

Liz and Ilana
