First Grade News

Hello Families,

In Hebrew, we learned the letter tet and added words to our word wall like: tabach (chef), tabaat (ring), telefon (phone) and tractor (tractor). We continued to practice our reading and wrote sentences using the action words tas (to fly for a boy) and tasa (to fly for a girl).

In writing workshop, we have launched into our nonfiction writing unit!  First graders have decided what they are experts on and have written books to teach their readers about building, math, taking care of babies, video games, baking, and gymnastics. We learned how to plan an information book and think about our readers (audience) and what they want to know by asking questions. We also learned how to extend our thinking by creating twin sentences. In reading, we look at nonfiction books closely to study how authors and illustrators teach their readers.

In math, we are are continuing to study the attributes of shapes in geometry. First graders have been working on identifying, sorting, building, and comparing flat shapes: square, rectangle, trapezoid, triangle, circle, half circle, quarter circle, rhombus, and pentagon. We also have learned how to split shapes into equal parts! We are practicing using fraction words, such as one half, one quarter, and one fourth to describe the equal parts. It has been fun learning how to manipulate the geo boards and practice symmetry challenges with pattern blocks!
