Field Trip
Writing Field Trip
We began the week with a writing-based field trip to 826NYC, also known as the Superhero Supply Company in Brooklyn. At the Supply Co. we were lead back into the secret writing lab (which we entered through a bookcase that turned into a secret door!) and began to brainstorm characters and a setting for our story. Then, we decided what makes for a good problem in a story, which second graders described as “one that is exciting and hard to solve”. Then, with the help of the amazing Superhero Supply Co. team, we wrote the beginning and middle of an epic tale. Students then had the opportunity to come up with their own ending to the story, as well as a few blank pages to illustrate the exciting story. Following this, the books were bound into more hard cover books, where our pictures were put on each book as we are the authors! We loved sharing our stories with each other and seeing how we all came up with different endings for the story we built together.
Ask your child what their story was about!
Science
This week the scientists completed the study of cucumber plants growing in different soil components by recording and drawing their plants in science journals. Each pair measured the plants’ heights with a stick. We compared all of the plants according to the different categories: type of soil component, number of leaves, plant height. The students also played a quiz game relating to the various topics relating to soil these past months. Everyone re-potted a plant into a larger container which they will bring home today to care for over the summer.
Chumash: Starting Parashat Noach
Now that our Chumash play celebrating our learning from the first parasha in the Torah is complete, we can continue on to the second parasha in the Torah- Parashat Noach, and the story of the flood. Students were challenged to find the page where Parashat Breisheet ends and Parashat Noach begins. We continued to use text skills learned this year to highlight key words, and also practiced memorizing the first pasuk (verse) of the parasha (video below). We noticed that God looks at the world differently at the beginning of Parashat Breisheet and at the end and discussed why that might be.
