Math with Justin

Fourth graders are almost finished with their multiplication and division unit. They have learned about prime and composite numbers, factors, and multiples. They are practicing creating factor trees to help find the least common multiples and greatest common factors. They also are learning to use this skill to solve Multiplication Mazes (see below). They also practiced several different multiplication and division methods and their bar modeling skills when approaching multi-step word problems. These foundational concepts and skills will be used all year, especially in our next unit on fractions that we will begin shortly.

To solve a multiplication maze, find a path of numbers from the entrance to the exit so that the product of the numbers equals the puzzle number. Try this one below.

Music with Heidi

In Music class, Fourth Graders have been singing Yemei Ha Hanukkah. They have also been mastering Mi Yimalel – singing it in a round, which takes a lot of skill! In addition, Fourth Graders have been working on their rhythm stick skills in preparation for xylophone playing.

Humanities with Hilary

How amazing were these performers?! Having this tradition return to our students was just beautiful to see

4th Graders have been working SO HARD on their Publishing Party projects [IN PERSON on Wednesday, December 8 at: 9am (Group A); 10am (Group B)]. They are each becoming an expert of a specific British Colony in what we now call North America, and their slides are chock-full of information! Some slides you might see on Wednesday are about:

  • religion
  • occupations
  • founders
  • religion
  • women in the colony
  • specific Native Nations from the area
  • landforms/geography/climate
  • childhood in the colony

… AND MORE! This process has been a true integration of reading, Social Studies, and writing. The 4th graders have been working on how to discern information to include/exclude from the slides, and how to label that information. They have been learning how to read to learn, not just read for fun. As well, this group has been working on how to turn information and text into their own words (aka trying to stop them from plagiarizing). These Google Slides are looking SO GOOD and we cannot wait to share them with you!

We have also been creating projects of things children would use or make in Colonial Times. At the Publishing Party, you will get to see their hornbooks, bilbo catchers and — if they were correctly created (crossing fingers) — pomander balls!
