December 2, 2022 — Oh the Weather Outside’s Getting Frightful …

Math with Luis

Fourth graders have been hard at work multiplying and dividing recently! Before thanksgiving, we had some fun writing, sharing, and solving our own word problems involving multiplication and division. We also had some fun thanksgiving-themed multiplication and division to really practice knowing when to divide and when to multiply. This week, we tackled factors, multiples, and prime & composite numbers, and had some very close Jeopardy games to wrap up the week.

Humanities with Hilary

4th Graders have been working SO HARD on their Publishing Party projects [IN PERSON on Wednesday, December 14 at 9am]. They are each becoming an expert of a specific British Colony in what we now call North America, and their slides are chock-full of information! Some slides you might see on that Wednesday are about:

  • religion
  • occupations
  • founders
  • religion
  • women in the colony
  • specific Native Nations from the area
  • landforms/geography/climate
  • childhood in the colony

… AND MORE! This process has been a true integration of reading, Social Studies, and writing. The 4th graders have been working on how to discern information to include/exclude from the slides, and how to label that information. They have been learning how to read to learn, not just read for fun. As well, this group has been working on how to turn information and text into their own words (aka trying to stop them from plagiarizing). The notes they have taken look so good, and we cna’t wait to share these with you!

We have also been creating projects of things children would use or make in Colonial Times. At the Publishing Party, you will get to see their hornbooks, bilbo catchers and — if they were correctly created (crossing fingers) — pomander balls! Some of these projects will be created next week, while the hornbook was created today.

Music with Heidi

In Music class, Fourth Graders learned how to play the Iroquois lullaby Ho Ho Watanay on the xylophone. They had sung this song last year as part of their end-of-year play. We discussed the power of this music and of learning music from a variety of cultures. This has kicked off our study of powerful songs and voices. Students have just begun to learn Rihanna’s American Oxygen, which links up to their studies of immigration in social studies with Hilary.

Hebrew with Rimma

A great way to practice speaking more Hebrew is learning a language through cooking.

4th graders are very grateful to Edna Alburquerque, Mattan’s mom who prepared chocolate balls and biscuit cake with the kids in Hebrew. It was a great opportunity to study new words in order to prepare the list of the ingredients and verbs as we needed to follow the steps of the recipe and what better way to learn the meaning of a new word than actually trying it out.

During last week we also were working on our Hebrew fables with scripts in hand, memorizing lines, performing songs, learning vocabulary, practicing pronunciation, and most importantly gaining fluency and confidence. We are excited to present it to you on Dec.14th which is just around the corner.

Judaics with Shira

After learning more about Hannah’s life and how they paralleled world events at the time, the fourth graders worked together to finish their timeline posters. They also memorized lines which they recited as the first grade to kick off the Kesher Day assembly, in front of a packed gym of grandparents and guests and did a terrific job! Their beautiful posters will be on display at the 4th grade parent event for you to look at more closely.
More recently we have been continuing to study Parashat Toldot in Chumash class. This past week we reviewed how to identify a male, female, and plural verb, as well as a shoresh. We learned that while there are rules in grammar, there are also many words that are exceptions to the rule, and we started to practice how to find a shoresh (root), even when all 3 of the root letters do not appear in the word.
Today we had parsha class where students  choose a parsha magazine to read with a partner and take home. The magazines are full of anecdotes, summaries, cartoons, questions, and debate topics that students can enjoy on their own or with family. Check out your child’s backpack for the magazine, and read about this new weekly magazine here:
