January 24, 2020 — Week of Social Action

Judaic Studies with Ariana We have been busy learning our unit of Food Justice. The students learned about food waste as well as food security versus food insecurity. We were fortunate to welcome again Caitlin from “Repair the world” for another insightful session that lead to interesting dialogue in our class. 3rd grade participated in the Senesh week of Action preparing delicious sandwiches and packing lunches for the hungry. January 10, 2019 — A Shehecheyanu to 2020

Hebrew with Rimma and Tomer Dear families, Happy 2020!! It was great to see the kids after the winter break. This week we continued to explore the Unit “The trip of our classroom “. December 20 — Chag Sameach and a Happy New Year

Hebrew with Rimma and Tomer During the past two weeks we were working on our Hebrew play , memorizing lines, performing songs, dancing, learning vocabulary, practicing pronunciation, and most importantly gaining fluency and confidence. It enables us to express ourselves creatively and spontaneously in different ways, to share our ideas for dance movements, to add more creative lines in Hebrew and just to have fun. December 6th

Hebrew with Rimma and Tomer In Hebrew we practiced verbal skills by introducing places that are familiar. We studied how to introduce the places and the people in our neighborhoods and discussed what is special in our neighborhood and what makes it so nice to live in. We recombined learned vocabulary creatively into a short paragraph by using verbs in the present tense and paying a lot of attention to some differences between Hebrew and English. November 15 — Our First Trip

Judaic Studies with Ariana We are so proud of the 3rd grade students for their moving performances during the Hannah Senesh Tekes. All the childrens’ Venn Diagrams written for the occasion are  currently on display outside our classroom. It’s simply moving to see how much in common the students have with our inspiring namesake. November 1st — Our first full week in a LONG time!

General Studies with Hilary Dear Third Grade Families, In Social Studies, we started learning about the Lenni Lenape, which is the Native American tribe that lived in New York City back in 1600. We started by looking at a map of Manhattan from the 2000s, and comparing it to a map of what Eric Sanderson (a landscape ecologist) — through research — believed Mannahatta (land of many hills)  looked like in 1600.   Students noticed that the Hudson River looked wider back then. JS with Ariana It’s been a lot of fun in third grade. After learning about Rosh HaShana, we went together to perform Tashlich. It was beautiful and meaningful to see all students engaged in this important mitzvah to seek a new beginning and work towards self improvement. September 27 — Shana Tova!

Judaic studies with Ariana In the past weeks we have been learning all about the Rosh HaShana Simanim. We learned the traditional foods that Sephardim and Ashkenazim eat in Rosh HaShana. We also learned what foods are common to both groups. We have been learning about the Shofar sounds(Tekia, Shvarim, Truah, Tekia Gedola) as well as the blessing we recite prior to listening to the Shofar. September 6th – First week of school

Hebrew What an incredible first week of Hebrew in 3rd grade! This week, as it was our first week back, we focused on the topic of introduction and reviewed the thematic unit “Me and my school environment”. The goal of this week was to become more comfortable in speaking, to have fun in Hebrew and to review past learned vocabulary. We played games and drew pictures as they follow instructions.
