6th Grade News: TEVA Edition

Dear parents, We hope you enjoyed our e-mail updates these last few days about our wonderful time at TEVA! Students had a blast hiking, exploring the natural environment, singing original TEVA songs, completing art projects with recycled materials, doing tefila (prayer) outside in the sun, and more. Throughout the week, they strengthened bonds with good friends and formed new connections with other classmates. It was wonderful to see the students outside the classroom, learning in active and creative ways. I know it’s an experience the 6th graders won’t soon forget! Feel free to browse our TEVA photos at this link....

Building Community and Tohu Va’vohu

Community Building With full weeks of school underway, we opened our classroom community up to visitors who had stories to read and information to share. Regina, the class’s kindergarten teacher, joined second grade to read them books that she remembered they loved when they were in kindergarten. She talked about how it is different now that she is a teacher for younger children, and shared memories of the students as kindergartners. Following this, Leo’s grandparents came in to read a book about the creation of the thesaurus. Second graders had prepared questions for Leo’s grandparents about their life in South Africa...

Happy Autumn Kindergarten Parents!

This week, kindergarteners are learning how to rotate in literacy stations and work independently during guided reading time. The kids blew us away with how well they took care of their group, cleaned up, and did their best work independently. In guided reading, we enjoyed practicing our pointer power to read pattern books (1 to 1 correspondence) and using our eagle eye to look at the picture to figure out unknown words. In a couple of weeks, we will start sending home pattern books that kids can read to you at home! Our class got to take their first trip...

Hello 4th Grade Families

General Studies with Mike: We’re continuing our math unit on estimation and number theory. This week, we moved into factors (including common factors and greatest common factors). This concept requires students to have a solid understanding of multiplication facts, so feel free to practice multiplication up through the number 12 at home. You can find multiplication games at timestables.com/games. We’re midway through our first read aloud, The Tiger Rising By Kate DiCamillo. This week, we discussed how to keep track of the problems and solutions that arise in books we read, and also how to keep track of the recurring...

Weeks 7 and 8: Monday, October 15th – Friday, October 26th

Hebrew This week the students took the Avant Hebrew Assessment. Avant is an online proficiency-based assessment which looks into all 4 skills: reading writing listening and speaking. The assessment allows us to track students’ ability to function in Hebrew. This is an accumulative knowledge test, therefore, students did not need to prepare for it.  The results will not affect students’ grades but will provide precious information. I wish everyone a relaxing weekend, Andreea Heritage

October 26 — different ways we’ve thought about learning

Dear Third Grade Families, We have had three full weeks of school, so far, and we are more used to the routines of each day. As a class, we are continuing to work on making eye contact (when talking to someone), and speaking loud enough for everyone to hear you. Next month will begin with two changes — students will have new lunch spots AND students will have new desk groupings. This is very exciting! In math, we tied up our unit on mental math. This section was about discussing the strategies we use to do math in our head...

6th Grade News: 10/15 – 10/26/18

HUMANITIES It’s been a full and busy two weeks in Humanities. In Social Studies class, students are writing and performing creative pieces about life in ancient Mesopotamia. Some students are writing scripts for news shows, while others are writing op-eds and news articles. They are including true facts about Mesopotamian climate, religion, and culture while writing about such topics as: “Slaves ran away from a priest’s family!” and “The holy ziggurat (temple) was flooded!” Students had a great time using their imaginations to bring ancient times to life. In English Language Arts, we are finishing up our study of The...

First Grade News

Next week we will be going on our neighborhood scavenger hunt. This week we started learning about some of the people we may meet in our neighborhood: community helpers. Community helpers are people who work to help our communities. Examples include doctors, sanitation workers, firefighters, and letter carriers. First graders made community helper trading cards and played community helper bingo.   As part of our social emotional work, we’ve started to discuss feelings. First graders made a feelings word wall in English and Hebrew. We read books in both languages about feelings and discussed how people may have different feelings...
