Hello Kindergarten Families

Greetings Families! We hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving break! Kindergarten read Thanksgiving stories and made their own square of a quilt to show what they are thankful for! They worked hard on their sounds, shapes, and handwriting to design the quilt square. We have introduced snap words recently, which helps students become more fluent in their reading and writing. A snap word (also called sight words or high frequency word) are words that we see often and do not sound the way they are spelled. They are called snap words because we read them in a snap (memorization) without sounding...

Students can’t wait to share their research with all of you at our Publishing Party on Friday, December 1 (aka this Friday!), which will begin at 9:00 am. They have been gaining knowledge about what the Lenape ate, their religion, wampum, clothing and more!           For the majority of this week, students were devoted...

First Grade News

First graders have been working hard for the past few weeks! In Math we learned about solid and plane shapes. First graders learned to classify and categorize these shapes. We also learned about tangram puzzles and made Thanksgiving themed tangrams. This week, we began our unit on numbers 0 – 20. We’ve begun learning about place value by thinking about larger numbers in tens and ones.   First Graders continued their opinion writing unit by judging a polished rock competition. They picked their favorite rock and wrote about why it was the best. First graders learned about what it means to...

6th Grade News: Pre- and Post- Thanksgiving Edition

HUMANITIES We’ve had a busy week in Humanities since returning from Thanksgiving break! In ELA, 6th graders are working hard on several different projects. For their independent reading projects, students are writing paragraphs and designing a poster to share what they learned from the biographies they read. To tie their work together, they’re all focusing on one primary question: Is the person I read about a hero? Why or why not? Upon reflection, some students have decided they really admire the people the read about, while others feel that they’re not heroes at all. Simultaneously, students are writing their own,...

Greetings 4th Grade Families!

General Studies with Mike: We just began our math unit on whole number multiplication and division. Students have learned the algorithm for two-digit by two-digit multiplication, and will continue to practice throughout the remainder of the unit. Students should continue to memorize their multiplication times tables through the number 12 at home. You can find multiplication games at timestables.com/games. We’re nearing the end of our read aloud, The Tiger Rising By Kate DiCamillo, and are beginning to discuss the literary theme of the story. We define literary theme as a “life lesson,” and identify the theme of a book by...

November 28: Weeks 12 and 13!

Humanities The 7th grade has been busy selecting passages to perform for a Julius Caesar Open Mic, as well as writing about the characters, ideas, and language of the play. Our cumulative vocabulary test will be on Friday, December 14th. I loved playing with words this past Wednesday! Ask your child to see their videos and pictures – they are posted in Google Classroom under the Vocabulary section of classwork. I’m challenging 7th graders to find more balance in their work: repetition is only ONE strategy for learning new ideas, words, and concepts. Memorizing an exact definition by heart won’t...
