Arrival in Israel!!

Hello Senesh and Senesh Families! Welcome to our first blog post of Hannah Senesh’s 8th grade 2023 Israel trip! It was a long two days of travel, and a hard day of being archeologists! Everyone was a good sport on little sleep. While we were archeologists at the ancient city of Maresha, we dug, sifted through rubble to find treasures, and uncovered pieces of pottery that hadn’t been touched in 2200 years—since the time of the Maccabees! We then crawled through the very narrow passageways of caves! We had to squeeze our bodies through small tunnels and winding paths. At...

4/18 – Second Grade Blog

Writers Workshop The second graders are working on studying sentences. They learned what a subject and predicate is and practiced identifying them in sentences. Then they worked collaboratively in sorting  fragments and sentences. They are now able to explain if a fragment is missing the “who” or the “what”. Reading The students learned about the soft and hard sounds of c and g. The rule is that when a silent E follows c or g at the end of a word, the consonants make a soft sound. They then read passages and found words that follow this rule. They found...

Kindergarten Blog 4/4

Dear Kindergarten Families, It was so nice that our final day before break was so warm! We are definitely excited for Spring. The class had a lot of Spring cleaning work in preparation for Passover. In Writers Workshop, Kindergartners read “Roller Coaster”, which is an exciting story about a roller coaster! We examined details in the people’s facial expressions and noticed how some pages had sound effects. Children are continuing to work on writing complete sentences with spaces between words and punctuation, and that our stories have beginning, middle and ends. In Word Work Kindergartners learned two new snap words:...

Hello Families, Our past seven days have been a whirlwind of preparation, celebrations, and our Seder. We had a very busy week learning about Pesach in the Hebrew classroom! We learned all about the ten plagues and learned a song to review the 10 Plagues in Hebrew and English. The first graders had so much fun making their own ten plague bags that they will take home to bring to their Seder. We reviewed everything we can find on the Seder plate (kearat seder) and what they symbolize. We also spoke about the meaning of the word chametz (food that we are not supposed to eat...

March 31, 2023 — … and Out Like a Lamb

Humanities with Hilary Dear 4th Grade Families, We have been having a blast at school these past few weeks. Buddy time. Purim. Field Trips. Social Studies lessons. What’s not to love? In reading, we have focused on non-fiction reading. One aspect has been how to read non-fiction books in general. Then we had lessons on “What do I do if I don’t understand the vocabulary?” or “How do I figure out what a complex text is talking about?” We worked on how to organize non-fiction writing and decided if it is a problem/solution text, a compare-contrast text, a cause &...

3rd blog – 3/30

It was so nice seeing you all at conferences and sharing your child’s progress. It’s amazing how far they have come since the beginning of the year! After exploring different biographies, each student was assigned a person of color to study that has made major achievements or contributions in their field. We are researching people of color throughout history until today who were active in politics, law, science, music, writing, dance, and others. Using the skills we learned during our Lenape research, we began to research and write a biography on our person. We have been looking at articles, books,...

Hello Families, In the Hebrew classroom, we started to learn about Pesach (Passover)! We reviewed the story of Pesach. We spoke about the different symbols of the holiday, including the hagadah, the seder plate (kearat seder), and matzah. We learned that Pesach has 4 names: Chag Hapesach, Chag Haaviv (the spring holiday), Chag Hacherut (the holiday of freedom) and Chag Hamatzot. We also reviewed the four questions (ma nishtana), and many first graders are excited to recite them at their Seders. We are going to continue to learn more about Pesach throughout next week. We learned how to write the letters gimel, mem and alef in script and continued practicing our reading and writing in Hebrew. The first graders...

Writers Workshop The second graders are once again published authors! The students celebrated with the kindergarten by reading their expert books to them. Then the kindergarteners read their stories to us! Reading In reading the students have been dissecting words and practicing reading multisyllabic words using different strategies. We tackle long words part by part by: working methodically from beginning to end, breaking the consonants in the middle, keeping digraphs together, breaking off endings, break before the consonant -le and checking all the parts! Math We continue to work on our multiplication unit. The past two weeks we focused on...

Dear Kindergarten Families, It was a wonderful week in Kindergarten, highlighted by a full day of activities on Purim.  We heard the Megillah, participated in a parade, went to a carnival, decorated and exchanged bags with our buddies, and heard about the seventh grade service project. For Purim, the students had a fun time creating groggers, masks, and clowns using all kinds of materials such as construction paper, paper cups, rice to make noise for the groggers and more!   In Hebrew class, we started reading the book “Caspion,” where we learned about different sizes: big-גדול gadol, medium-בינוני benoni, and...
